A Message from AFA's
Deputy Director, Educational Services
Regardless of whether you have worked in dementia care for decades or are new to the field, there is always room to develop new skills and approaches for supporting individuals living with dementia and their families. As part of DCPA's effort to disseminate best dementia care practices and help you develop professionally, we have recently released our newest training and certification program, AFA Partners in Care: Supporting Individuals Living with Dementia. This self-study program--developed specifically for paraprofessionals and professionals working in dementia care--is comprehensive and multidisciplinary, covering topics ranging from diagnosis through end of life, as well as professional self-care, and features dementia care experts, families, and individuals with dementia.

We encourage you to visit the DCPA website to learn more about this innovative and engaging training program or to be in touch with us directly with questions or for more information.

In health,

Kristen Cribbs, MPH
Deputy Director, Educational Services
DCPA Happenings
2015 Dementia Care Professional of the Year Award Nominations Now Being Accepted!
DCPA is now accepting  nominations  for the 2015 Dementia Care Professional of the Year Award. This distinction, awarded annually, recognizes doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists, nursing assistants, direct care workers, administrators, and others who go above and beyond to provide the highest quality dementia care. Professionals do not need to be affiliated with AFA or its member organizations to be considered. Nominate an outstanding dementia care professional by October 1.

Dementia Care Provider & Specialist Qualification Renewal Changes
Attention Qualified Dementia Care Providers (QDCPs) Specialists (QDCS'):  Beginning September 1, 2015, AFA will be phasing out its QDCP  and QDCS  credentials, as we are no longer offering the corresponding training programs. All individuals who previously received these distinctions and wish to maintain credentialed through AFA will be required to participate in AFA's new  AFA Partners in Care  training program and complete the AFA Partners in Care  certification exam. Pursue this certification by completing a  renewal form.
In the News
  • "The Hill" discusses the recent D.C. Court of Appeals decision ruling that the Department of Labor can make home-care providers eligible for the minimum wage and overtime pay.
  • An article from "The Guardian" explains findings from a study conducted by researchers at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago-- recently published in Neurology-- that people with dementia tended to lose awareness of memory problems two to three years before the condition developed.
Continuing Education
Each month, AFA offers a free, monthly teleconference--Care Connection-- geared towards professional and family care partners. Featuring an array of leaders and experts in the field, Care Connection, which is held the second Thursday of each month from 1 to 2 pm ET, seeks to provide care partners with valuable knowledge on topics related to Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, including medical, behavioral, practical and social. As a participant, you will have the chance to ask questions and learn from other listeners.

Learn more about upcoming presenters and topics on our website and participate in a teleconference to
earn one Continuing Education Unit (CEU)*.

*Professionals who are sanctioned as AFA Certified Dementia Care Partners must renew their credential every year by obtaining eight CEUs.
Every hour of continuing education equals one credit . 30 minutes of content equals 0.5 credits. A program of less than 30 minutes in total is not applicable, and all intervals of less than 30 minutes are rounded down to the nearest 30-minute mark.
