City Council Initiatives
  • Noise Ordinance Adoption: The city council adopted a new noise ordinance on October 16. Under the new ordinance, noise complaints will be managed by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. Noise will now be determined by "plainly audible" standards, rather than a decibel meter. The South Harbor Mixed Used zoning district is currently exempt from the new ordinance and is bound by the old ordinance using decibel meters. View the new ordinance here beginning on page 57.
  • Short Term Rental Task Force: Applications are currently being accepted and appointments will be made November 6.
    • The city council approved a motion on October 16 to "Schedule a portion of the draft Land Development Code amendments for review by the Local Planning Agency without the amendments relating to short-term rentals, and revisit any amendments relating to short-term rentals after the task force makes recommendations to the city council."
  • Medical Marijuana Dispensary Regulations: The city council approved a motion on October 16 to "Allow medical marijuana treatment center dispensing facilities to locate within the city, but amend the Land Development Code to ensure that regulation for such facilities is not more restrictive than regulations for pharmacies located within the city."
  • Gulf Power Electric Distribution System Purchase: The city council approved a motion on October 16 to negotiate a franchise renewal with Gulf Power while simultaneously pursuing an RFP for a consulting firm to review the financial evaluation of purchasing the utility from Gulf Power.
  • Comprehensive Plan Amendments: The first reading of Ordinance 17-22-PC, which amends Comprehensive Plan: 2020 by amending Chapter I - Future land Use Element, Chapter 2 - Transportation Element, Chapter 12 - Administration and Chapter 13 - Glossary, will take place on November 6.
Details for these items are released with the respective agenda. Agendas are typically published the Thursday prior to a council meeting and can be found here.
