“Batik, the Language of Cloth”
Sat. June 2 through Sat. June 16—Tiffin Art Guild
Daniel Gundlach, great-great grandson of Anton Gundlach, founder of the sheet metal business operated on East Perry St, Tiffin for 70 years, has been working as an artist in the San Francisco Bay area since receiving a master’s degree in music from the University of the Pacific in 1971. He has been an ardent world traveler most of his life and has collected many indigenous textiles along the way. Gundlach founded the business, The Language of Cloth in 2002 to promote and market the textiles of Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
Indonesia has been his second home for more than 25 years and there he developed a passion for Javanese batik.
Batik is a traditional method for applying designs to cloth using wax as a resist in the dyeing process and it is the national treasure of Indonesia. He studied the art of making batik for many years and has collaborated with Javanese artists to produce his own work which will be exhibited at the Tiffin Art Guild Gallery.
Regular gallery hours are Wed through Sat from Noon to 4 pm.
In addition, Gundlach will be teaching two workshops, one on “Shibori” for young people 8 to 14 on June 9 & another workshop on “Batik” for students 15 & up on June 16. All events will be held at the Tiffin Art Guild Gallery, 130 S Washington St, Tiffin. More information on tiffinartguild.org
Gundlach will give a presentation about his experience in Indonesia with excerpts from his DVD, The Batik of Java, A Visual Journey at the gallery on Monday, June 18 at 7 pm. For more information, contact Karl Erbland 419-618-1780.
