Message from the RAP Assistant
Check out all of the exciting, educational events taking place over the next month and a half, providing opportunities to learn more about our local environment. Whether you enjoy gardening, birding, hiking or boating, there's something for you!

And stay tuned for a new addition to the DRCC family! We are currently in the process of hiring a RAP Assistant, as I have taken a full-time position with the Essex Region Conservation Authority as the Watershed Nutrient Monitoring Technician. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working for the DRCC and will continue to stay involved, working to restore our river, together.

Volunteers Invited to Add Native Plants to Community Gardens
Windsor - The Windsor Essex County Community Garden Collective (WECCGC) and the Essex Region Conservation Authority have partnered to implement a unique community garden in Windsor. Approved by City Council earlier this spring, the Lens Avenue property is located between Elsmere Avenue and Louis Avenue. Encompassing approximately 7,070 square meters, the area will be divided into two sections. One area will have soil-producing compost beds, fruiting vines, and other produce. "The second area will feature a series of berms and swales for water control, as well as the planting of native wildflowers, grasses and trees," explained Caroline Biribauer, ERCA's Outreach Coordinator. "We are pleased to partner with WECCGC on this project."

On Saturday, June 11, from 9 am to 1 pm, volunteers are invited to help plant native wildflowers and grasses at the Lens Avenue site. This event is rain or shine. Volunteers are encouraged to wear boots and long pants, and to dress for the weather. Planting equipment and gloves will be provided to all volunteers. High school students can earn community service hours. A light barbecue lunch will also be available for all volunteers. For more information on the June 11 community planting, contact Caroline, Outreach Coordinator for ERCA at [email protected] or 519-776-5209, ext. 245.

Massasauga Recovery at Ojibway Prairie
Jonathan Choquette will be giving a talk about his work to recover the local population of Massasauga Rattlesnakes. The Ojibway Prairie population of Massasaugas is one of only two populations of this species remaining in Canada's Carolinian zone. It is geographically isolated from its Canadian counterparts by over 300 km, is genetically unique, and is the only representative of a tallgrass prairie population of this species in Canada. We are now at the point where less than a dozen adults remain. Since 2013, Jonathan has worked with Wildlife Preservation Canada to implement strategic recovery and monitoring actions recommended in the Recovery Strategy for the Massasauga in Canada. Come out to hear about the actions that have been implemented and some of the results! Everyone is welcome!
