DiNapoli: Queens Rebounds from Recession, Economic Growth Expected to Continue
New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released an economic snapshot last week highlighting the recent growth in the borough of Queens, the largest, most diverse county in the nation. The unemployment rate in Queens has consistently been lower than the rest of the City through 2012, and has continued to drop in 2013. The aviation and film and television industries have contributed significantly to supplying jobs for the borough. Silvercup Studios now has 410,000 square feet of space, while Kaufman Astoria Studios now has the City's only outdoor movie set. In addition, small businesses are predominate in the borough with 44,070 businesses in 2011. More economic growth is underway. JetBlue moved to Queens Plaza North in 2010 bringing over 1,000 new employees to the area. A plan for a proposed tech zone is underway, in order to promote growth in the technology sector and spin-off from the Cornell NYC Tech campus planned for Roosevelt Island. Renovations to the New York Hall of Science and Queens Museum help to bolster visitors and the economy. |
