Join Dia director Philippe Vergne for a visit to Walter De Maria's iconic long-term installations. Vergne will share the evolution and history behind The Broken Kilometer (1979) and The New York Earth Room (1977), two of Dia's earliest commissions.
Dia's tour is part of The Festival of Ideas for the New City, a five-day collaborative initiative during which nonprofit organizations, universities, arts institutions and community groups invite the public to participate in a variety of symposia, independent projects, and public events centered around the common theme of "imagining the future city."

The May concert at Dia:Beacon will feature quartets by Schumann and Mahler, and prodigal late 19th century Russian composer Anton Arensky. The concert, which will be held in the John Chamberlain gallery, will be the last in the partnership between Dia and St. Luke's, as the Ensemble will be focusing its programming at the DiMenna Center, its new performance and rehearsal space in New York City. Dia Art Foundation is pleased to present the recent theater piece, MoonRain, by Robert Whitman, a pioneer of multimedia installation and performance. Referencing a famous collection of 18th century Japanese ghost stories by Ueda Akinari, the innovative work is set inside a fog environment designed by Fujiko Nakaya and will be staged in Dia:Beacon's lower level gallery. Each spring Dia Art Foundation celebrates Dia:Beacon with the annual Spring Benefit, a full day of art and performance that provides vital support for Dia. The 2011 Benefit - co-chaired by Sandra Brant and Ingrid Sischy, Alison Spear, and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler - will commence with refreshments, followed by a performance of Robert Whitman's MoonRain (2010) and a seated lunch amidst John Chamberlain's sculptures.
Attendees are invited to spend time in the museum at their leisure throughout the day, and a family program will be offered during lunch for younger guests.

Wilson discusses Koo Jeong A's dynamic spatial interventions into the Hispanic Society's gallery. Mabel Wilson is an associate professor in architecture at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, where she currently conducts courses, scholarly research and design experiments which investigate space and cultural memory in black America, race and visual culture, and new technologies. She received a doctorate in American Studies from NYU (2007), and an M. Arch from Columbia's GSAPP (1991) and directs the GSAPP's program for Advanced Architectural Research and the HBCU Leadership Project. For more information, click here.
