Dickens, Unitarians, and Christmas
| Sunday at 11 am in the Church Sanctuary
service conducted by The Rev. David Sammons, Consulting Minister |
 | |
Charles Dickens
|
Unknown to a lot of people is that, as an adult, Charles Dickens decided to become a Unitarian. It was because our image of God was not the judgmental, vengeful God or orthodox Christianity, but of a loving God who expected us to be loving, as well.
It was in this spirit that Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol, a story the Rev. Sammons would like to take a look at in his sermon.
Ministering in music will be Organist Reiko Oda Lane and the choir led by Dr. Mark Sumner.

| Ministerial Relations Committee Welcomes Your Communication | |
from the Members of the Ministerial Relations Committee for the Rev. Dr. Stephen Furrer
| |
The Ministerial Relations Committee (MRC) of Interim Senior Minister the Rev. Stephen Furrer met Wednesday for the first time since August at the home of Rev. Furrer. The committee is charged to "Serve as a channel of communication between the Membership of the Society and the Minister." (Bylaws VI, C, 2, b (3))
Members of the MRC need your help to fulfill the role assigned to them by the Congregation.
MRC members invite all Society members to contact them with their thoughts and concerns regarding the ministry at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco. They are ready to listen and to engage in respectful conversation with you.
The committee's members don't want to be an end-around or a substitute for direct communication between Members and Reverend Furrer, but are always interested in finding ways to facilitate the safe asking of questions and sharing of concerns.
Please contact MRC members by phone, email, or in person when it is convenient for you. The MRC members are Gino Fortunato (ginof@mindspring.com 415.867.4195), Carrie Steere-Salazar (Carriess@sbcglobal.net 415.710.0384), Lucy Smith (lhsmith.630@gmail.com evenings only:510.528.8540), and Galen Workman (Galen@ozdachs.com 415.347.6479).

from Dolores Priem
|
Author Frank Bardacke will speak about Cesar Chavez and the organizing efforts of the United Farm Workers, the subject of his new book.
Mr. Bardacke was active during the student and antiwar movements of the 1960's. He worked for six seasons in the Salinas Valley fields, was a teacher for 25 years, and has written one of the greatest books about any workers' union.
The presentation is free and tea, and snacks will be available.
The event is co-sponsored by Unitarian Universalists for Peace and the Progressive Democrats of America.
The Sensible Cinema screening of "Over Troubled Waters", also on the calendar for Thursday evening, has been postponed because of a scheduling conflict of the speakers.

| In Memoriam | Pulpit Reflection, September 28, 2012
by Susan Anthony
| It is our tradition in this church to extinguish a candle to mark the death of a member. It's an awful moment: first realizing that the minister is crossing the chancel to reach for the candle extinguisher, then watching as she or he slowly snuffs out a candle and proceeds to the pulpit to tell us the name of the person who has died. Then there's an audible intake of breath as we receive the information.

| Helping the Women at Kopanang |
|
Sister Sheila Flynn and Kopanang Project Director Silindile Twala spoke on the chancel last month in a service conducted by the Rev. Margot Campbell Gross. Afterwards, Members and friends purchased handcrafted articles made by the women of the project.
The morning's plate collection was dedicated to supporting the efforts in South Africa. Additional donations may be made by writing a check to the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco and marking "Kopanang" in the memo line.
