Experience Thailand's stunning Loy Krathong festival this November 25, 2015

Thailand's most beautiful and colourful festival takes place on the night of a full moon (usually in November). Thais will launch their handmade krathong, decorative floats made of flowers and leaves, into rivers, canals and ponds. The krathong symbolizes letting go of all one's hatred, defilements and anger. Many Thais also use the krathong to thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha, and make wishes for the upcoming year.

During the festival Thais also send glowing khom loi lanterns made from a thin fabric, such as rice paper, to which a candle or fuel cell is attached. When the fuel cell is lit, the resulting hot air trapped inside the lantern lifts it up into the sky.

Along with the lantern and krathong releases, a number of parades, fairs, beauty contests and fireworks displays are also held during the festival. The beauty contests that accompany the festival are known as "Nopphamat Queen Contests". According to legend, Nang Nopphamat was a consort of the Sukothai king, Loethai (14th century), and is believed to be the first to float a decorated krathong.

To take part in and experience this festival, we are here to assist you with hotel reservations and tour package arrangements. Book now.
