When Tarana Burke spoke in Pittsburgh earlier this month, professors and students from the Grand Challenge Seminar on "Shifting a Culture: Understanding Gender-Based Violence" attended.
 
"Rarely do the words that students see on the page and use in the classroom find themselves almost simultaneously in the media and serendipitously in a talk by the leader of a movement that is shaping the topic of gender-based violence," said Candace Skibba .
Like Andrew Carnegie, Psychology Professor Brooke Feeney’s heart is in the work.
 
In Carnegie Mellon University’s Relationships Lab, Feeney studies close relationships and how social interactions can affect the health and well being of the people in the relationships and of the relationships themselves, both immediately and over time.
CMU’s Humanities Center and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust are bringing the Pittsburgh Humanities Festival back. It will feature internationally-renowned academics, artists and intellectual innovators through March 4.
 
"The last festival more than doubled the attendance at the first, and, on the strength of that growth, we decided to make the Pittsburgh Humanities Festival an annual event," said David Shumway , professor of English.
Home to the co-founders and trailblazers of behavioral economics, Carnegie Mellon University recently created a first-of-its-kind behavioral economics, policy and organizations (BEPO) major to continue training the next generation of behavioral economists.
 
This spring, the Department of Social and Decision Sciences will award the program’s first degree to Muriel Pokol .
Laura Podesta (DC’10) is proof that a humanities education from Carnegie Mellon University is a solid foundation for an exciting career.
 
Podesta, who majored in history, has built a career in broadcast journalism, beginning with an internship while a CMU student. She is now a part of the CBS News team as a Newspath correspondent, reporting breaking news for CBS affiliates nationwide.
