Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation

It hardly seems possible that we are starting our seventh summer season of Ocean Therapy for children, Marines and Veterans.   Our program, conceived as a way to heal abused and at risk children through surfing and group therapy, started with six children from Hollygrove Children's Center, two counselors, one occupational therapist and about 20 volunteers who loved Jimmy and loved to surf.

With professional guidance, both on the surfboard and on the sand, the children experienced profound changes in their behavior and showed lasting effects from just one Ocean Therapy session.  From that small stoked group of new friends on the beach in 2005, the JMMF Ocean Therapy program has grown to a year-round therapeutic tool for wounded, injured and ill Marines with the Wounded Warrior Battalion West in Camp Pendleton, Veterans from the Los Angeles Hospital Center and hundreds of children from six different facilities around the Los Angeles area, including the Richstone Family Center, Hillsides, Hollygrove, Vista del Mar and the Didi Hirsch Mental Health Center

In 2012, we plan more than sixty sessions of Ocean Therapy. To date, more than 1000 people from all walks of life have volunteered their time to help in the water, on the surfboards, on the beach, take pictures, make snacks, serve lunch and participate in the healing group sessions that were dubbed, "the kumbaya time," by the Marines themselves.  There are so many ways to contribute to the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation and "help heal others as we heal ourselves."  We look forward to seeing you this year.
