Enter the New Age of Digital Doubles

How much better will the digital doubles of 2017 be compared to what we have seen so far? Will they be even more photo-realistic than Grand Moff Tarkin (ILM's digital likeness of Peter Cushing) performing as a supporting character in December's Rogue One? Will quality continue to increase, and will technological advances allow prices to come down while speeding up rendering times? The VFX planning mantra is usually faster, cheaper, and better. But realistically it's good to prioritize the top two for your project.

It's clear that the 'better' element has been increasing rapidly. It is an exciting time to see digital doubles as supporting characters in big budget movies.  Price and speed of deliverability are tied together; tight deadlines often drive up the price. Budgets proportioned to the task allow for better quality when building complex photo-realistic digital characters.

For 3D characters  the type of scanning matters: will you use  structured light, laser, or photogrammetry ? All three methods take about the same time for clean up, unless you only need the raw scans.  Re-topology, UV's, textures, and 3D modeling times are also similar for all three methods. Cyber cloth, cyber hair, and facial expressions in the form of blend shapes add additional costs.

The new year holds much promise for digital characters. Innovation with current tools coupled with better processors and rendering algorithms that are on the horizon will surely bring about developments that will make them more viable and realistic than ever before.

Detail, Speed, & Accuracy with

Photogrammetry allows you to 3D scan capture the structure along with the existing light in high quality photos. This can give you really astounding results. The capture method is an ever evolving technique in itself. With the emergence of drones with mounted cameras, you can circle a building and build it out in 3D. There's tons of refinements to be done to get the best possible data from a capture like this.

Pipelines really benefit from photogrammetry data. It slashes texturing time, and allows the data to be highly accurate. Through taking a large number of images in photogrammetry scan, a texture output can be created at very large sizes, including 16k resolution.

Photogrammetry is about creating thick point clouds by taking many photos, utilizing line of sight for the angles you find necessary for the data you require. If you want all sides of an object, you'll probably be circling the entire thing, or spinning it on a turntable. We have found it very valuable as well to     3 D scan using multiple technologies so that the tolerance accuracy can be compared, and some surfaces will be more easily captured with one technology over the next.

Micro-detail is possible in photogrammetry if you really manipulate the environment for maximum results. For example, the camera settings in so far as the lens, the focal distance, the aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and metering mode. These settings can alter photos drastically, and there are many pitfalls to watch out for. We have found examining photos to be very necessary since photogrammetry relies on very high quality photos - it's important to zoom in and analyze your photography for photogrammetry to ensure the sharpness window fits everything you need it to.
LiDAR Article

Lidar is a 3D scanning tool that has massive appeal and use. When it comes to projects needing large 3D scans (such as for building interiors and exteriors, vehicles, and planes), lidar is the go-to scanning method to use. Due to its precise measurement it is esteemed for its ability to capture ornamental decorations and other organic small shapes that are part of a much larger overall scan.

Lidar is also used in scanning natural settings to get environmental data of clearings, parks, or outdoor locations. Lidar can even be used for bridges, oil derricks, loading platforms for ships. and other unusual structures.

We consider lidar to be an excellent tool which compliments our other scanning services (structured light and photogrammetry) and rounds out our offerings to handle any 3D scanning project. Lidar is also widely used in pre-vis and as a safety net for set scanning, just in case the set data may be needed in post.

As  VR develops, we are finding more uses for lidar scanning. VR sets benefit from being scanned, and can also be used for the promotion of VR-experience films or other projects.
