Summer of 1867 Was Big Year for Our Diocese

By Lori Korleski Richardson, Interim
Communications Director, and
the Rev. Harry Allagree, Historian for the Diocese of California

Two Episcopal churches not too far apart - Grace, Fairfield, and Ascension, Vallejo - are celebrating their 150th anniversaries this month.

At right is the first Grace Church, established in Suisun as a mission in 1867. In 1879 Bishop John Henry Ducachet Wingfield wrote: "Suisun, where we have a small church and rectory attached. During
the past year my Chaplain has held semi-monthly Services, which have been well attended. Four persons were confirmed in May, and in anticipation of the happy event, the ladies had the building put in thorough repair. I found a church without debt or incumbrance - a rare
state of affairs in California..." (Spirit of the Missions, Vol. 44, p. 21)

Ascension, Vallejo, celebrated its founding with a visitation by Bishop Barry Beisner Sunday, July 23, and Grace, Fairfield, will do likewise this coming Sunday, July 30, with a service at 10 a.m., followed by a luncheon for the bishop and area clergy in Suisun.

Read more about the history of these two churches and nearby St. Paul's, Benicia (which had its first service on Sept. 24, 1854) here.

Lift Every Voice Lifting Up Youth Leaders

Our group from Northern California - the Rev. Sarah Quinney, Anna Wiley of Trinity, Folsom, Emily Potts of Epiphany, Vacaville, and Emily Dedo of St. John's, Roseville, and young adult leaders Elizabeth Potts of Epiphany, Vacaville and Kevin Briggs of St. Martin's, Davis - have been learning how to apply what they have learned in the prior years of Lift Every Voice and how to spread the word of reconciliation to others. They were in Haw River State Park in North Carolina July 21-25.

Rev. Sarah, our Missioner for Youth Discipleship, said: "It has been wonderful to connect in person with the friends we have made from all over the world. Some new youth have joined us this year, including a few from our diocese, and I have been so impressed with the way the other youth have welcomed them into their existing community. One of our youth, Emily Dedo, said on her first day here, 'I love it here. Everyone is so kind and every where you look people are laughing and talking.' "

Unlike past years where the participants made pilgrimages to sites of deep wounds in the American South and in South Africa, Rev. Sarah said, "This year has solely focused on training the youth to be trainers, leaders and facilitators so that we are ready to come back to our communities and train others to help us continue the work of reconciliation."
