August 11, 2017

Sunday, August 13, Pentecost 10. The liturgical color is  green.

The Episcopal Church in Utah just turned 150 years old this month.  As we celebrate, we bring you a bit of history in each newsletter. Church of the Holy Spirit, Randlett, has been a part of the Episcopal Church in Utah over 120 years. This picture shows the church in 1920. Later it was moved across the Duchesne River to its current location to be more convenient for its members.

An Evening With The Rev Brin Bon

By Laura Orcutt
St. James'

" Be present. Be in the now. Be focused and conscientious of what you are doing." Sound advice given by Rev. Brin Bon during an enjoyable evening with women from around the diocese. With some light, healthy appetizers beforehand, the women welcomed a refreshing evening of listening, learning, sharing, and reflection. Twenty-two women from four different parishes, St. James',  The Cathedral Church of St. Mark, St. Stephen's, St. Paul's, and from other faiths, gathered at St. James and warmly received Rev Brin Bon's wisdom on Food and Faith.
Rev. Brin asked the women to think of and share memories about food in their lives. She described beautifully and in great detail the story of her father and her sharing salami and pickle sandwiches while going fishing during her childhood. Women then discussed their connections of food with family, location, friends, people, atmosphere, and storytelling. Rev. Brin reminded the group to be mindful and intentional about eating and to ask what God is trying to give us through the experience. Slow down, pause, be more present, and connect to the food. In that moment, bring our whole selves to God. Take that moment to realize the presence of God in our lives. Just enjoy eating, not the moralistic aspects of it or what is right or wrong. Be present, be in the moment, be connected. Enjoy the now.
The evening's event was the kick off for the Episcopal Church Women's (ECW) Women's GO! series for the diocese for the upcoming year. Through this initiative we will provide several events intended to nourish and enrich lives. The upcoming events are still in the planning stage.  There will be a full weekend event, "Love Heals," led by the Rev Becca Stevens of Thistle Farms at the ECCU, in November. January, we hope to have a panel discussion of Women of Faith Living in Community with Rep Rebecca Chavetz-Houck as one of the panel members, location to be determined. In 2018, The Rev. Mary Janda, Vicar, Stephens Church, 4615 S 3200 W  will lead a Women of Three Faiths panel discussion at St Stephens. We hope all women in our diocese will come to these events to be nurtured, connect with one another, and grow. May we grow in Christ's love this year.
Rev. Brin grew up in St James' parish before discerning her calling into ministry. From there, she spent time at St Paul's and St Mark's in preparation for seminary. She currently serves St. Michael's in Austin, Texas.
