Aging with a Disability: We Want to Hear from You!

seniormansmiling It happens to all of us, including those of us living with a disability. In our next Transition magazine, we'd like to share stories and information about aging with a disability around questions like these: What are the biggest challenges you have faced getting older with a disability? What does "healthy aging" mean to you, and are you finding ways to achieve it? Do you have any "advice" you'd like to give others on ways to cope with and find support around aging.

We'd love to receive your comments or short articles. If you send your content to trans@disabilityalliancebc.org by April 10th, your name will go in a draw for a $25 gift certificate to Starbucks or London Drugs. Thank you.

Disclosing Your Disability to Potential Employers Workshop

DABC has received the following information from the Neil Squire Society:

Are you a person with an injury, illness, or disability?
Join us on the last Wednesday of every month from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm

Disclosing a disability is a subject many people struggle with when applying for employment.  Working on how to disclose comfortably is very useful throughout your job search. Practicing with  people before disclosing to potential employers can make the process much more comfortable.

At this workshop, we'll talk about the many aspects of disclosing a disability:
  • Difference between visible and invisible disabilities
  • What are your rights?
  • Why are people afraid of disclosing
  • When should you disclose
  • Available workplace accommodations
  • How to disclose
March 28, April 25, May 30, June 27, and July 25, 2018

Dental Surgeries for British Columbians with Disabilities to Increase

Minister of Health Adrian Dix has announced that in the next year, BC hospitals will perform 900 additional dental surgeries.

From the news release on the BC government's website:

" The increase in surgeries will support children and adults throughout B.C. who require general anesthetic for their dental procedures, e.g., due to developmental disabilities or complex medical conditions. The result will be a substantial reduction in wait times for people currently suffering in pain."
