"Why Bad Things Happen to Good People"
"Superstorm Irma Slams Florida".  We witnessed those headlines as Hurricane Irma pounded Florida.  The story is all too familiar with the recent devastation of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Jose is on its way.  In a four-day period, many areas received more than 40 inches of rain as the system roamed over eastern Texas and adjacent waters.  It caused catastrophic flooding. With peak accumulations of 52", Harvey was the  wettest tropical cyclone on record in the United States . The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people and prompted more than 17,000 rescues.  Read more about 'Why Bad Things Happen to Good People'.

It has been difficult watching the devastation of lives and property in recent tragedies such as hurricanes, wild fires, earthquakes and much more.  Lives are impacted by adversities, like what is going on in my own home for example.  I'm sad to say that the love of my life, Karen, has stage 3 ovarian cancer

Fires in the Western United States
Our hearts break for those who are experiencing such great loss of life and property in the face of multiple catastrophic events in our sphere of influence.  The number and scope of the current needs are so great that you and your congregation may feel paralyzed, not knowing what to do.

CB North Central's/CBAmerica's strategy in light of these needs is:
Encouraging individuals and congregations to consider initially giving to those organizations best prepared for early relief efforts.  Our early response agency of choice would be SAMARITAN'S PURSE. Other options would include the Salvation Army, Red Cross and the North American Mission Board (Southern Baptist).

To help meet long-term recovery efforts we are encouraging individuals and churches to give to  CBAmerica's ACTS Fund (Acts of Compassion in Tragic Situations). Along with  WorldVenture, we are partnering with  Crossover Bible Fellowship of Houston and the  Houston Church Planting Network.  They are an anchor relief church and organization that are receiving teams from churches wanting to help. If your church would like so send a team, submit a form ( access team form).

We continue to communicate with our  CBNorthwest Region in regard to the fires that are devastating the area.  Additionally, we will look to  Missions Door for disaster relief efforts in the Caribbean and Southern Mexico.
WE WELCOME three new pastors to the CB North Central Region.
Pastor Craig Morris began at First Baptist Church in New Richmond, WI 7-2-17.
Pastor Vernon Risner started at First Baptist Church in Pekin, IL on 8-20-17.
Pastor Ken Pierpont will begin on 9-17-17 at Bethel Baptist Church in Jackson, MI.

Please join us in praying for these pastors and their families as they transition into their new churches and communities.
There have been a number of new pastors that have begun new roles in ministry within CB North Central churches.  Some of these pastors are young and just beginning their ministry while others have years of experience, but have followed God's call to a new church family. We have asked some of our pastor's who have been in their churches for sometime if they had any advice to pass on to these newly transitioning pastors.  We have received a number of replies with heartfelt advice and we hope you'll enjoy the wisdom that has been shared.

New pastors should make prayer the utmost discipline and the study of the Bible a daily practice, it is easy to skip these things with our busy schedules but to skip them is the biggest mistake a pastor can make.  Visitation of those in their care comes next. People need their pastor to call on them pray and cry with them. They should be faithful in preaching the word.  Give invitations, to preach without an invitation is a waste of our breath. If pastors will do these things they will go a long way.

PS    I suppose every pastor knows to do these simple things the problem is they don't practice them.

What advice does a new pastor need?  Much more than I'm capable and qualified to give, but I do have a few thoughts that I've learned over the past twenty plus years at the same church.

1.  Don't take yourself too seriously.   Seriously.  Have a sense of humor.
2.  Practice "rigid flexibility."   Expect to make adjustments and changes.  There are more ways of doing things than yours.
3.  Get to know your context.  Find out who is connected.  Learn the church rituals and routines.  Discover the church's values.   Don't treat something you haven't first diagnosed.
4.  Connect with other pastors for prayer and encouragement.  Find like-minded pastors to pray with, not compare with.
5.  Tough times will come.  Learn about conflict, how to respond to it, and especially know your own tendencies toward it.
6.  Remember that there is often more than meets the eye.  I remind people that there are three sides to every coin - head, tail, and edge.
7.  Develop good healthy leaders.   Leave a legacy of leaders for the next pastor.  If you inherited some good leaders, be thankful.

On a recent Sunday morning we had the joy of baptizing 10 individuals. They ranged in age from 10 to 60 (ish) years old, and in spiritual age from newly born-again to more mature believers who were convicted of the need to honor Christ's call to baptism. Beyond the blessing of hearing ten testimonies of the spiritual transformation, we had a packed sanctuary with the addition of family and friends who also heard the gospel from those being baptized.

This baptismal service took place in the midst of our elders giving increased attention to what it means for our church to 'make disciples'. For the last year we have
been working toward a greater intentionality in helping people know Christ, grow in their faith, and provide opportunity to serve Christ, both in and through the church.

Our church has also been giving more attention to missions. As a relatively young church, we have desired to grow in caring for and connecting with our missions partners, near and far away. As we have spotlighted one of our missions partners each week in the worship service, we have begun to see a change in our congregation's concern for missions, slowly growing to be a 'Great Commission' church.

" Through the years, Morrison has always been a neighborhood church - the congregation has remained small, but the family love is big here.  The north side of Minneapolis is notorious for its crime rate, so many people see it as a "dangerous" place to be.  But we see it as a wonderful place to be.   The people in north Minneapolis are a diverse community, and are warm, and accepting, they make it a joy to go to their doors and give what we have to them."   Read More

The Valley of Death
"Although my grandfather suffered, his suffering had a purpose," he said. "If we had ended his life early, even for reasons of compassion and mercy, we might have missed out on God's redemptive grace that will bless our family for generations. The Lord had work for him until the very end."

"Church communications is a burgeoning field.  It's not just the large churches that are looking to fill this role. Mid-size and small churches are realizing the importance of having a singular person responsible for their church's communications and social media."
