Did you know that the 8" X 3" tables we use for Back to School Night, Science Fair and Chili Cook off are begged and borrowed from other schools for each event? For this year's Chili Cookoff, Mrs. Baltimore and her husband came to our rescue when it looked like we would not be able to find tables. They not only secured the tables from their church, but they transported them to and from the school. We would not have been able to pull off this event without the help of our fearless organizer Leslie Kekelis, parents volunteers, PTA board members, countless staff and teachers. I am reminded again of what makes Discovery great. When the chips are down, we have a community that pulls together and creates an event that the students look forward to every year; and that is everything.

MEET YOUR PTA
  Amy Swicord: Communications Chair
Amy works as a Preschool teacher. When she isn't chasing her preschool 4 year olds, she is keeping the calendar on all things PTA. She has served on the board for 3 years and brings a great sense of continuity to our ranks. She lets the PTA Board, teachers and parents know what is coming and when. Additionally, she patiently waits for newsletter entries so she can construct the newsletters you view every month.

FOUNDATION GRANTS!!
DR. KRISTY MALL

Congratulations to Dr. Kristy Mall!  She was recently appointed to the  Parent Editorial Content & Advisory Board for the National Association for Gifted Children, the largest gifted education support and advocacy group in the country.  In addition to her recent appointment, she was also selected to represent the Tennessee Association for the Gifted (for which she serves on the state board) at the NAGC conference  in November as one of four delegates to attend a national summit and meeting for gifted policy and advocacy.  There, she will be meeting with state representatives to discuss gifted policy and needs nationwide.

BESS TURNER

The grant received was titled "Breakout EDU: Will You Escape?", for $1,780.00. The idea is based on the "escape room" model but   instead of a room, the idea is reversed to breaking into a box. Breakout EDU is a complete immersion in the learning process and content area, but in a way that is so engaging, it works with any age group. The materials are a black box, hasps, locks, invisible ink and challenges free to educators. Breakout EDU simplifies the idea of preparing students for the future through a few materials and an endless amount of challenges in order to "Breakout" of the box. The challenges are created around all content areas to help solve riddles and mysteries to breakout while allowing students to be social, interactive, and help to develop soft skills needed for any situation. Engagement is a huge part of the learning process in order to, "make it stick", and my hope is that after students experience the challenges themselves, they begin creating their own challenges for others to "Breakout".

Chili Cook Off
Chili Cook Off

Oh, what a night!! I want to send a huge thank you out to all of the volunteers, parents, teachers, & students that made our chili cook-off the huge success that it was! We were blown away by all of the creative table decorations & costumes (including authentic pirate talk)! We couldn't pull off such a huge event without all of you, so a huge round of applause goes to all of you!

I also wanted to send a special thank you to our judges as well. Joe Minter, Owner/Operator of The Green Dragon (and DS parent!), Manny Santana, Owner/Chef of The Block, Wesley Ballard from the Murfreesboro City School Board, Jason Page, EA & Basketball coach at DS, and last but definitely not least, Sarah Svarda, Librarian at Central Magnet (past DS!). They took time from their busy schedules to help us out with our big night. Make sure you support them as often as you can!

Help out with the holiday lunches!
Our annual holiday lunches are coming up, and we need some additional hands to sell tickets and help out in the cafeteria. Visit this online sign up sheet to let us know when and how you can help out. Thanks!
THANK YOU to our chili cook-off volunteers! They wrapped hot dogs, stuffed bags, set up tables, collected tickets, directed foot traffic, made and served drinks, cleaned up, and went above and beyond to get all the jobs done. This crew worked hard to make sure the evening ran smoothly:
Jennifer Allen, Ivey Bahloul, Michelle Black, Niki Delk, Greg Dowling, Kathie Elfersy, Gina Jones, Amy Jordan, Helen Kingston, Lauryn Kingston, Rachel Leander, Mike Lovin, Pat Lovin, Lori McCarrall, Angela Morrell, Stephanie Olsen, Tracie Parker, Carie Parmer, Stephanie Roach, Molly Royer, Jennifer Smith, Jennifer Stacey, Matthew Utzig, Lisa Wells, Scott Zelenak
We know we are missing some unnamed heroes who stayed late and helped clean up the gym. Thanks to you, too!
And a big thanks to Leslie Kekelis, who organized the whole event; Sarah Woods, who organized the judges; and Sheryl Mabry, who ran the kitchen.

GUIDENCE NEWS
Student Council

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS: Concession stand sales are going really well! Thank you all for your support of Student Council. Each item is one dollar toward our students being able to provide support to other students in a variety of ways! Also, our Student Council Class Representatives have been leading their classes in group discussions on bullying prevention and friendship. This year our school scored way below the national average for student-reported bullying events! We are so proud of our "Discovery School Defenders"!
Socks

BIONIC NEWS: SOCKtober was a huge success! Thank you to all who contributed. The students gathered 604 pair of socks for other students in need. Those socks will be distributed to schools in our district who support the homeless and disadvantaged children of our city. Also, Friday, November 4th BIONIC will host a special lunch for students who are new to Discovery School this year. We are so glad they are a part of our school community.

We have a purse that was found after the chili cook-off.  Would you please include "If you or your child lost a purse at the Chili Cook-Off, please contact the office.

Hi Everyone,
We lost a pirate hat during the chili cook off. It might have been placed with another table's decorations during clean-up. Please let me know if you have seen it. It was one of Viggo's favorite dress up toys.
...
Also, we were inadvertently given a small wicker basket. Does it belong to any of you?
Thanks!
