Thank you to all of our Discovery students, parents, and staff for a successful Smart Card fundraiser!  To date, there have been 912 cards and 26 entertainment books sold.  Mrs. Jackson's class sold the most overall, and Daphne Ragsdale in Mrs. Payne' class had the most sales.  Again, thank you for your support!

W elcome Natalie Hopkins
I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to join the Explorers here at Discovery School.  I previously taught 5th and 6th grades at Northfield and Cason Lane Academy while pursuing my Masters Degree in Integrating Technology into the classroom and my Specialist in Education Degree in Administration and Supervision.  After having been Assistant Principal at Scales Elementary and John Pittard, I am excited to bring my experiences here.

I have a 7th grade son, Evan, who I enjoy spending my time with outside of school.  We love to fish and going to  the lake with my family in the summer.  I also have grown up riding Quarter Horses, which I still enjoy doing in my spare time.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and your children!
Welcome Katie Holmes
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.  My name is Katie Holmes, and I will be your School Psychologist for the 2017-2018 school year! I've lived in Murfreesboro the majority of my life and  attended Middle Tennessee State University where I earned my Bachelor's, Master's, and Education Specialist degrees. In addition to my experience as a School Psychologist, I have worked as an examiner at the Center for Dyslexia at MTSU.

This is my fourth year with Murfreesboro City Schools, and I am excited to join the Discovery team.  During my internship with MCS, I instantly became a celebrity, Katie Holmes, when I married my high school sweetheart, Charles Holmes, over fall break.  We have two dogs, a yellow Labrador and a German Shepherd.  We enjoy traveling and spending time with friends and family.  He likes to cook, and I enjoy baking so it works out well.  Finally, it is important that you know the best way to reach me. I will be at Discovery School on Tuesdays (and as needed) and at Overall Creek Elementary on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The best way to contact me is to email me at  [email protected] .  Please consider me part of the school family and let me know how I may be of service.

Welcome Dan Hoyt
After completing 24 years in the United States Air Force, my family and I moved to Murfreesboro in July 2013,  where I started taking classes at MTSU immediately, finally graduating in December of 2016.   During my final semester, I had the privilege of working with Lori Turnbow as a student teacher.   After such a great experience at Discovery, I feel very fortunate to be working as the Physical Education interim teacher this school year.
I couldn't have made it this far without my wife Audre, who is my rock and best friend.  We have been married for 13 years and she tells me I am very happy.  We have two wonderful boys Kyle (19) and Cameron (17), who always make life interesting.  Our newest member of the family is our spoiled rescue dog Bea, who truth be told I think rescued us. My goal this year goal is to get children moving in a safe and fun environment. "Physical Education should be fun. If I can teach children to love movement now they will hopefully carry that with them the rest of their lives."

BEST Robotics
The 2017 BEST Robotics Game Day will be October 28th at Lipscomb University in Allen Arena. BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) is a robotics program for middle and high school students. The program has been around for 24 years and was started by two engineers at Texas instruments in an effort to get students excited about STEM subjects and careers. This will be Discovery School's 10th year to participate in the BEST Robotics, and we are "gearing" up for another championship year. Discovery's BEST team would love to have a record number of younger students come to Game Day and help cheer on our team this year. It is a great opportunity to expose students to all components of engineering and marketing.

SPRING PRODUCTION!!!

Discovery School's Spring Production will start preparations earlier this year so that we can present our show before Spring Break, before testing, before the end-of-school rush; so Mrs. Baltimore and Mrs. Kleppinger are asking for Production Team Volunteers! These are adults who can help spearhead the main areas of putting on a show. Here are the positions we need filled:
  • Technical Director (mics and sound)
  • Costume Manager
  • Props Manager (works closely with Set Designer/Stage Manager)
  • Set Designer/Stage Manager
  • Producer (tshirt/DVD orders, designing posters, programs, advertising)
  • House Manager (pre-show activities, ushering, cast party)
  • Photographer/Filmographer (headshots, behind-the-scenes photos, recording the show/burning DVD's)
These positions will have multiple parent and student volunteers helping them, but this Production Team will be the go-to people who are in-the-know.
