Message from the Superintendent
Summer, as always, has flown by. This summer was particularly active. Summer learning opportunities existed through Destiny: Imagination, STEM Camp, Extended School Year, and a variety of S.O.A.R. classes. There was a little bit of something for everyone. Based on feedback from the surveys, we will continue to strive to maintain the things that went well and improve on the areas for growth.
Teachers were involved in professional development ranging from learning more about the new technology programs at Park Junior High to learning Orton-Gillingham Reading Strategies and Structured Word Inquiry strategies. By the end of next summer we will have all of our Kindergarten through Grade Two teachers trained in Orton-Gillingham Reading Strategies. This will help us as we strive for our District Goal that all children will read at or above grade level by the end of Third Grade.
Our incredible maintenance staff has been cleaning the buildings and getting them ready for the start of school. Congress Park received an incredible Playground facelift over the summer, thanks to the Congress Park PTO with a huge shout out to Shannon Kudia for her work in organizing a large portion of this project! Ongoing painting and updating continues to occur at each of our schools in order to keep them looking fresh and inviting for our students.
It is going to be a spectacular year. As we continue to address the goals in our Strategic Plan, we will keep the community updated through the district website and monthly newsletters on our progress, hurdles, and successes. With the current state of affairs in Springfield as they relate to school funding, there is little more that we can say that you haven't already seen in the media. We continue to encourage all parties to come together and pass a new school funding formula that will benefit all of our students and districts to ensure that all students have the opportunities and experiences that will prepare them for the future. We will keep the community updated with any changes that may directly impact District 102.
We look forward to seeing all of the students back at school for a half-day on Wednesday, August 23. Enjoy the remaining weeks of summer!
