Superintendent's Message

Dear RBHS Students, Families, Staff, and Community,

It's amazing that we are at the end of January. It seems like the winter break was just a few days ago. We have started the second semester, and the next six months will be an exciting and busy time for District 208. The Board of Education has released renderings of the capital improvements to the athletic facility at a recent meeting, and they can be viewed on the RB website. The Board of Education, along with the Administration, will begin to finalize the District's Technology Plan with the end goal being a 1:1 school. For more up-to-date information, please check the RB website under the Board of Education tab, or you can watch the meetings on www.rbtv.tv.

Cordially,

Kevin Skinkis, Ed.D.
Life Safety/Capital Improvement Projects

Phase 1 construction (demolition of the home and visiting bleachers) commenced Friday, January 30, 2015. Phase 2 (home/visiting bleachers, track, field surface, and locker rooms) and Phase 3 (tennis courts and parking lot) will be going out for bid around the second week of February.

Phase 3 (tennis courts and parking lot) will be the last phase of the project that will be constructed if all the zoning and permits are approved by the Village of Brookfield. Currently the school district is going through the zoning variance process with the Village of Brookfield. The Village is requiring the District to apply for a "variance" on fence height and setback since the District is planning on moving the tennis courts to a different location on their property. The District also had to apply for a "special use" permit that would allow the District to put a parking lot (91 spaces) on its property off of Rockefeller Avenue. The next zoning commission meeting is March 12 at the Brookfield Village Hall. Please consider attending this meeting and vocalizing your support for the proposed improvements.

District Technology Plan

At the January 27 Board of Education meeting, the Administration provided a status update on the District's technology plan. The plan calls for the District to provide all incoming freshmen with a Chromebook at the start of next school year and follow this format through 2018 until all grade levels have a Chromebook. A formal recommendation will be presented to the Board of Education for approval in March. The financing and the student technology fee still need to be vetted before a recommendation can be made. A link to the District Technology Plan and supporting documents can be found on the website under the "District" tab.

Naming Rights

The Board of Education is considering providing naming rights to individuals or entities that make a significant donation to the School District to help pay for the construction of improvements at the outdoor athletic facility. There are numerous naming/advertisement opportunities! Interested parties should contact Dr. Kevin Skinkis, Superintendent, at 708.442.8484 or [email protected]

District Calendar for 2015-16

A draft of the District's proposed calendar for the 2015-16 school year is available in the January Board of Education packets (website "Board of Education" tab). The Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the proposed calendar at the February 10 meeting.

Weather and School Cancelation

Canceling school is not an easy decision to make, and there will always be someone that is not happy with the choice that is made. If weather conditions permit the faculty and staff to attend and operate the school, the District's goal is to conduct classes as scheduled. We understand that a parent may have a concern with the weather and choose to keep their child home. If that choice is made, please remember to call the attendance line to verify and excuse your child's absence.

Class of 2015 Graduation

Just a reminder that the stadium will be unavailable for graduation. Graduation will be held in the main gym. There will also be video feeds for additional guests in both the Auditorium and Little Theater. Information related to tickets and times will follow in the coming months.

Upcoming Board Meetings

The Board of Education is scheduled to meet twice in February (10 and 24). For more information on the Board of Education meetings, please check the RB website under the Board of Education tab or you can watch the meetings on www.rbtv.tv

Principal's Message

As you will see in this edition of Hallways, despite the cold weather, our staff and students have been busy. Students have been actively involved in service projects, poetry contests, and state competitions. We are very proud of the musicians and Puppettes who performed at the state level. The Clarion has also been working hard to put the finishing touches on their Valentine's themed hard copy issue. There are also a number of upcoming opportunities for the students to support their classmates by going to see a band or choir concert, an athletic contest, and the spring musical.

Staying engaged, of course, in class is equally important, especially as the long winter days continue. Talk to your student about the importance of the upcoming standardized tests and review his or her grades together to create a plan to end the quarter successfully. Regular daily attendance, along with homework completion, seeing teachers for assistance, and being actively engaged in class, will result in academic success.

Kristin Smetana

Student of the Quarter

On January 9, we honored 10 students representing each academic department, in addition to a student building leader, who exemplify our values of "Excellence and Ethics in all Bulldogs Do!" These students were nominated by faculty for excelling in two areas: academics and character.

Front Row: Yulissa Jimenez, (Senior - English Department recipient); Melissa Tovar (Sophomore - World Language Department recipient); Eleni Collis (Senior - Math Department recipient); Tiffany Rosicky (Senior - Library/Media Arts Department recipient); Back Row: Kieran Hynes (Sophomore - Wellness Department recipient); Annabelle Daily (Senior - Social Science Department recipient); Ben Longo (Senior - Fine Arts Department recipient); Frankie Filec (Sophomore - Applied Arts Department recipient); Ms. Kristin Smetana (Principal). Not pictured: Joseline Jimenez (Junior, Science Department recipient)

Jake Lucas (Senior, Building Leader recipient)

School-wide Testing Day - March 3 (Early Dismissal)

March 3 will be an all school testing day for the majority of RBHS students.

  •  Freshman will be taking a PLAN test
  • Sophomores will be taking a practice ACT exam
  • Juniors will be taking a state-funded ACT exam with writing
  • Seniors will have a non-attendance, college visit day

Dismissal time for this test day will be 12:35 for any student not receiving accommodated testing support. Room assignments will be posted for all students testing closer to the testing day.

Poetry Out Loud Competition

Congratulations to our school-wide Poetry Out Loud winner, Amanda Martinez, who was representing Mr. Dignan's class. Her recitation of poet, Thomas McGrath's, "Ode for the American Dead in Asia" earned high scores in presence, articulation, dramatization, complexity, and understanding and demonstration of an inherent sympathy for war victims. She will advance to the regionals in Des Plaines on February 18 for the chance to compete at the National Poetry Out Loud competition and win a $20,000 scholarship. Congratulations, too, to the other students who placed in the top five: runner-up Adam Nie; Nicole Bajerek; Gianni Segarra; and Lisandro Resto. The competition was organized by the Library Department, which is hosting a daylong poetry slam with a visiting spoken-word poet this spring in collaboration with the English Department. Students may apply to attend this in-school field trip through their English teachers when a date is established.

Watch My Feet

On January 5, an energetic, innovative group of teen leaders called "Watch My Feet" performed for all freshmen Wellness classes. RB students Breuna Wilson and Dalila Ovalle are members of this dynamic LeaderShop performance group. This unique ensemble composed of diverse students from four area high schools brings the message of hope and leadership to other young people in the community. They create their own skits and dances based on teen issues to encourage teens to make positive choices.

Student Association Update

Custodian Appreciation Day

Custodian Appreciation Day was January 29. This is the third year the Student Association and PBS Acknowledgement Committee teamed up to celebrate and thank our amazing custodial staff for their hard work and dedication to RB. Lunch and dinner were served to the day and evening crew as a small token of our gratitude for all they do to make RB a special place to come to learn and work.

RBHS Spirit

We continue to award fifth hour classes who are wearing RB Blue and White. Once per month, on an announced Friday, Student Association Executive Board members ask fifth hour teachers to record their class percentage dressed in spirit wear. At the end of fifth hour, members of SA enter the room and give the students and teacher an immediate reward. Then the class is entered in a drawing for a pizza party to be awarded at the end of the semester. The first semester winner was Ms. Edwards' class with 100 percent participation.

RBHS Blood Drive

The second Blood Drive of the school year will be held on Wednesday, February 25,

9:00 a.m. - 3 p.m. Students may sign-up to donate blood during their study hall or Wellness class. Sign-ups are in the student caf during all lunches Tuesday, February 17 - Thursday, February 19. RB's Spring Musical, "Bye, Bye, Birdie"

Tickets for RB Theater's production of "Bye, Bye, Birdie!" will be on sale through www.rbhs208.net beginning in mid-February. The musical runs March 6, 7, and 8 in the RB Auditorium.

Rock star Conrad Birdie is the biggest thing to top the charts. Women love him, men want to be him and teenage girls around the country scream with glee at the mere mention of his name. But when the United States Army drafts Birdie, manager Albert Peterson sees his meal ticket preparing to fly the coop (much to the delight of longtime love Rose Alvarez, who can't wait for Albert to ditch the music biz and become something respectable, like an English teacher). Desperate for a publicity stunt big enough to help them survive Birdie's departure, Albert and Rose hatch a plan: send Conrad to small-town America to plant his goodbye kiss on one lucky fan for the entire world to see. Their selection of super fan Kim Macafee sends the wholesome enclave of Sweet Apple, Ohio, into chaos. Kim's boyfriend, Hugo, can't take the humiliation of his lady love's televised lip-lock. Rose can't take another minute of Albert's distracted ways. And Sweet Apple can't take its teens' riotous rebellion, inspired by the arrival of bad-boy Birdie. Will Sweet Apple ever be the same?

English Language Learner Parent Education Program -- Free Class to Learn English

All-State Musicians

We are extremely proud that RB was represented by six talented students at the Illinois Music Educators Conference (IMEC) in January. All of these students were invited to join musicians from around the state in rehearsals and workshops in their given areas culminating in performances on January 31 in Peoria. Chosen at the District level through an audition process were:

  • Louis Grigoletti, Honors Choir
  • Ben Longo, Choir
  • Andrew Lemeurier, Band
  • Mia Haugland, Orchestra
  • Miranda Molina, Future Music Educators Seminar
  • Alex Tong, 3rd place Composition Contest
Pupettes Perform at State
On Friday January 30, the Riverside Brookfield Dance Team competed at the IHSA State Competition down in Bloomington Normal, Illinios. The girls were originally ranked 20th out of the 30 teams that made it down state. After an amazing performance and hard work from each and every girl, the team moved up four spots placing 16th in state. There were originally 74 teams competing to make it down to state. The girls did an awesome job and it was great experience for everyone!
Service Projects at the Ronald McDonald House
Girls Gymnastics

In February, the gymnastics team will be making their 4th Annual Presentation of Toys and Dolls to the children at the Ronald McDonald House on the Campus of Hines Hospital in Maywood, while they are receiving medical treatment. On the same day, the gymnastics team will make their 4th Annual Presentation of Daily Living Supplies to the USA Soldiers living at the Fischer House on the Campus of the Hines Hospital while they are receiving medical treatment.

Freshman Girls Basketball

On Saturday December 13, 2014, the freshman basketball team gathered at school and took the mini-bus to the Ronald McDonald House on the campus of Loyola Medical Center. As a part of the program's annual commitment to giving back to our community, the girls went out and purchased small gifts and toys for the families who have to spend their holidays at Loyola. The girls were the first to deliver gifts that they placed under the tree in the main living room of the house. The team was given a tour of the House and had the opportunity to meet a few of the residents who were there for an extended stay. It was a very rewarding experience for all and a shining example of how RB Cares!
