District 208 News
Superintendent's Message

Dear RBHS Students, Families, Staff, and Community,

As you may know, the District 208 Board of Education completed a facility assessment (including a life safety study) in November 2013. Two needs identified in the assessment were the replacement of the tennis courts and the replacement of the home and visitor bleachers in the stadium.

The current courts, which sit on a small plot of land owned by the District next to the stadium, are more than 25 years old and have serious surface and drainage problems. The stadium stands are significantly older than the tennis courts and have multiple safety and compliance issues.

Another identified problem that has plagued the District for years is that it does not own any parking space. Currently, the District has use agreements with the Village of Brookfield (Rockefeller parking - $14,000 annually) and Brookfield Zoo (parking lot adjacent to the high school's main entrance - $18,000 annually). While we work with the Zoo to gain access to the lot whenever possible, it is ultimately their land, and we have no control over its use and when the gates will be locked.

One proposal the District is considering is relocating the tennis courts off of the District's property and constructing a parking lot on the land where the courts currently sit, next to the stadium. This would be one inclusive project to renovate all of the District's facilities west of Golf Road that were not addressed in the last building renovation project.

The goal of building a parking lot is to be able to provide staff, students and visitors with access to a parking area that the District owns and can use at any time.

The first draft of preliminary plans for the tennis courts, parking lot and stadium were provided to the Board of Education at the April 22, 2014, meeting. We anticipate that changes will be made to the plans based on community input and further development by the architect and engineers.

The Board of Education will be conducting Public Facilities Committee meetings to encourage public comments, ideas and feedback. The dates and times of upcoming meetings will be posted on the District's website at rbhs208.net, under the Board of Education tab. We look forward to being able to solve these important issues for our staff, students, families and community.

Cordially,

Kevin Skinkis, Ed.D.
Tax Rate Relief
At the April 22nd Board of Education meeting, Tim McGinnis (CFO) reported that the District has begun investigating refinancing opportunities for approximately $15.5 million from the construction bonds the District sold in 2006. Refinancing the bonds would produce a decrease in the property tax rate for residents. The bonds are not callable until December 2015. The District CFO will be following the progress of the market (interest rates) closely. The bonds sold in 2007 are not callable until December 2017.
New Trail to Provide Safe Walking, Biking to School
School Board member Mike Welch and Dr. Skinkis have been working closely with representatives from Riverside, Brookfield, North Riverside, Cook County Forest Preserve, Illinois Department of Transportation and Cook County Commissioner Jeff Tabloski on a plan for a north-south trail connecting 26th Street with Ridgewood Road, and eventually an east-west trail connecting First and Prairie Avenues. The trail would provide a safe route for North Riverside students walking or biking to school. It would also benefit the local community, as it would connect to the Salt Creek Trail system.
Alumni Achievement Award Nominations Sought
The Alumni Achievement committee is accepting nominations for the Alumni Achievement Award. The award strives to identify graduates of Riverside Brookfield High School who are recognized for their high level of contribution to society. Award recipients will be acknowledged at a dinner in fall 2014. A commemorative plaque will be displayed at RB. Applications can be downloaded by clicking here, or can be found on the rbhs208.net website under the Community tab, Alumni.
RBHS News
Principal's Message

It is difficult to believe that this is the final Hallways Newsletter of the school year.  What a busy year it has been for our students and staff!  As a parent, you are aware that the academic rigor at RB does not lighten up as the final day of school approaches. On the contrary, our students are still busy testing, competing and learning.  For instance, at the end of April, our juniors took the Prairie State Exam with its ACT and Work Keys portions, the sophomores took a practice ACT test, and the freshmen worked on career lessons in Naviance and on state-mandated anti-bullying curriculum. The standardized tests assess the level of our students' personal knowledge and skills while giving them a perspective on how they compare with other students their age across the state and the nation. The social-emotional and career lessons help our students apply responsible decision-making, goal-setting and interpersonal skills in order to lead satisfying and productive lives.

During May, we will administer approximately 1,112 Advanced Placement tests, covering 20 subject areas. Our students recognize that these tests, while not the only valuable measure of learning, serve as a gateway to future opportunities. We are very proud of their determination to capitalize on the self-improvement courses, the advanced placement courses and national examination opportunities we offer them.

Spring is also a time to pause and celebrate the many accomplishments of our students, particularly those in the senior class. On April 30 the Administration, Board of Education and PTO hosted our Senior Awards Night. On May 7, the Student Services Department will host a Senior Scholarship Reception, thanks to the generous support of our local donors, and our Booster Club's annual dinner to honor our senior athletes will be held on May 18. At some point prior to graduation, we will hold an event that will allow our seniors to get together in celebration of the years of hard work the Class of 2014 has devoted to academics, sports, activities, service and the community. This event, being planned cooperatively between the Student Association and the Administration, is something that makes RB the special place it is. We take the time and effort to appreciate and reward each and every student's positive contributions and personal accomplishments.

Even as our year winds to a close, RB continues to offer our parents and community members the opportunity to enjoy first-rate entertainment and sporting events. Come and witness the wonderful talents of our students. Please refer to our website and this newsletter for details on upcoming events.  Of course, the most important event at the end of the year is graduation. Look for helpful information in this newsletter.

As my final year as the Principal of Riverside Brookfield High School nears its end, I am filled with many emotions - foremost pride. I am so proud to have joined the strong group of devoted, bright professionals at RB, who make it their mission to deliver the best possible education to our amazing students. It has been my honor to partner with the wonderful RB parents, guardians and community members, and to serve our extended community. I am pleased that RB has embraced the Six Pillars of Character Counts!, relying on the ethical values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship to guide the behavior and decision-making of staff and students.  I have worked hard to make RB a place where students excel in all areas of their lives: academically, socially, emotionally and ethically.

Thank you for making these past four years such a positive experience. As I move on to the next phase in my professional career, I will always carry a soft place in my heart for RB, for I know that it truly IS great to be a Bulldog!

My hope is that your school year ends on a positive note.  Once it does, have a safe, restful summer break.

Sincerely,

Pam Bylsma

RB Follows State, Federal Anti-Bullying Mandates
RB is known as a caring school where teachers and staff members pride themselves on making sure that each and every student receives the support needed to be successful academically and emotionally. An essential part of providing a nurturing, safe environment that fosters student growth is to ensure that acts of bullying, intimidation and harassment are actively discouraged and effectively addressed when they occur. Such incidents diminish a student's ability to learn and have the potential to be so emotionally devastating that teenagers can lose their motivation to come to school, and in severe cases, the will to live. Therefore, preventing students from engaging in these hurtful and disruptive behaviors is an important District goal that is stressed to the students repeatedly.

All Illinois schools are required by state law to include bullying prevention curriculum and character instruction in all grades, as well as incorporating student social and emotional skill development into educational programs. District 208 Board Policy 7:180: "Preventing Bullying, Intimidation,
and Harassment" aligns with state and federal laws and clarifies what must be done at RB to be in compliance these mandates.

We are proud of the proactive steps we take in regard to this issue. If you have any concerns about bullying, harassment or intimidation, please read our bullying prevention brochure, fill out a bullying report (on our website), or call any administrator directly. Open collaboration is the best way to keep improving the school climate for all of our students.

For more information about RB's anti-bullying initiatives, click here to download a pdf of an article by Principal Bylsma, or you may find the article on our website under Parents/Forms & Documents.

On April 3, 99 members of the class of 2015 were inducted into National Honor Society. They were selected based upon an application process that displayed their scholarship, leadership, service and character. During their senior year, they will plan and execute a variety of service projects at RB and around the community. Congratulations to all! Lindsay Mynaugh is the NHS sponsor.

Also in April, NHS members from the classes of 2014 and 2015 held bake sales to raise money for "Send a Girl to School," sponsored by Heifer International. Through this program, families in third world countries are provided with training and livestock so they can earn the living they need to pay for school fees and supplies. NHS's donation will support sending two girls to school.

Badminton Team "Serves" Those in Need

Each athletic team is expected to build Character Counts! ethical values in students by participating in a service project. This year, the Bulldogs' Badminton program worked with The Charity Stripe and helped raise money for families dealing with cancer and United States military veterans. Their April 4 "Serve it up Day!" collected $939.50 for the charity. The girls took turns hitting 50 serves, while every "in" serve went towards the fundraising effort based on the pledges they received. Congratulations to the team and coaches Tom Rocco and Lanette Niemann.

RB Staff and Students Drive to Raise Leadership Funds

The Athletic Department and the JKB Student Leadership group hosted a second Ford Drive Event on April 24. To increase staff participation, there was a competition between departments. The first department to have 100% participation (the Student Services Department) won breakfast and coffee at their next Late Start Professional Learning Community meeting. The fall and spring events raised approximately $4,500, some of which will be used to send newly selected JKB students to the Colorado leadership ranch this summer.

Softball Team Strikes Out Breast Cancer

On May 6, the RB softball team held their annual "Strike It Out!"Game for Breast Cancer Awareness and Fundraising as their Character Counts! service project. Congratulations to our talented students and Gary Prokes, their teacher and mentor.
Talented Student Artists
Junior Designs Next Student Handbook Cover

Parley Belsey was selected by the Art Department and Principal Bylsma to design the front and back covers of next year's Student Handbook and Planner. Mrs. Bylsma established the practice of having the cover designed by a current RB art student. "I approach this as an authentic job I am contracting," said Principal Bylsma. "The student meets with me to propose concepts. Once one is approved, the artist must submit sketches, meet deadlines, work with the publishing company, and interface with my assistant."

"The intent of the piece," Parley explained, "was to show the climb to success, and how our school could lead to a fantastic future. The stairs, window and kids in the picture are photographs of pieces only in RB, to represent what could be found nowhere else."

RB Student Asked to Design Police Department Logo

Officer Katzin of the Riverside Police Department has asked student Rebecca Burke to redesign the Riverside Police Department Arm Patch. Officer Katzin saw Rebecca's art work hanging in Mr. Passarella's office and decided to offer the project to Rebecca instead of the company that designs patches. Rebecca's patch design will move into production and soon be seen on all police uniforms!
What Parents and Students Need to Know About E-Cigarettes
Technology has made great advances for education, however, we are very concerned with the technological advancement of electronic cigarettes, or E-cigarettes. The use of these devices is prohibited on school grounds or anywhere there is an extension of the classroom.

Students caught in possession of an E-cigarette or using one will receive a disciplinary consequence. Electronic cigarettes are considered contraband by the school, and students will be suspended for one day for the first offense and three days for the second offense. Using electronic cigarettes or possession of electronic cigarettes is also a violation of the athletic code.

Parents should be aware that E-cigarettes are being used as a way for teens to ingest drugs. In March, a Chicago area high school caught five freshmen using them to ingest THC, the ingredient in marijuana that causes a high. Media reports indicate that when smoked through an electronic cigarette, the effects of THC are 10 times greater than when smoked in a joint or pipe.

Students Get Real with the Chamber of Commerce

In April, the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce teamed up with our Consumer Economics classes to provide students with a realistic opportunity of living life on their own. The "Reality Store," which was designed by the Chamber, asked students to choose a career and marital status for what they thought they would be doing by age 25. The goal of the activity was to teach students how to live within their means and to budget appropriately so that they will have enough money to live and to put into savings. Thank you to the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Consumer Economics teacher Patty Sarkady for organizing the event and their dedication to our students.

RB Celebrates Staff Appreciation Week
May 5-9 marks this year's national Teacher Appreciation Week. At RB, we recognize that every person, and not just our teachers, positively impacts our students.
