Superintendent's Message

Dear RBHS Students, Families, Staff, and Community,

The 2016-17 school year is underway! I would like to welcome our students and staff to the start of a promising new year. Riverside Brookfield High School has had a tradition of excellence for the past 100 plus years. RB lures people to our community because of the appeal of a small school; our exceptional academic reputation; an attentive and caring staff; and the amazing extracurricular opportunities our school has to offer. District 208 is a great school district, and I commend the parents, guardians, and community members for your continued support and pride in RB.

Below are some items of interest from our District.

Cordially,

                           Kevin Skinkis, Ed.D
The Life Safety/Capital Improvement Projects
Summer construction work is nearly complete. Our Main Gym will have new bleachers and a new floor. The ceiling and lighting have also been renovated. The Gym is expected to be ready for use in early October. Entrance G is still under construction. We are replacing the stairs, railings, and the handicap ramp. I anticipate this being completed and open for student use in a few weeks. The roofing project is in the final phase with roof ladders and flashing being installed. New roofs were installed over the Main Gym, Little Theater stage, and a portion of the Social Studies and Special Education classrooms.

Track and Field Update
Presently the Track and Field will be restricted for use during the school day for students and supervised activities before and after school hours. Due to an unsafe and unsecured construction area, the facility will not be open for general public use. The remaining construction in the athletic complex is on hold during the ongoing litigation with the Village of Brookfield.

When the track is open to the public, please pay close attention to the signs that will be posted. The track surface is specifically for running or walking. Pets and bike riding are prohibited. Following the posted rules will ensure that the track will remain in top shape for many years. It has come to our attention that some individuals have used their bicycles on the track. Our maintenance crew will continue to monitor the area and evict the offenders. The local police departments are also aware of these situations and will oversee the area. We are hopeful that this situation will be resolved soon, and the facility can be enjoyed by our RB communities.

Contract Negotiations
The Board of Education and Riverside Brookfield Education Association (RBEA) are involved in negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement for "Teachers and Support Staff." Although the previous contract expired on June 30, 2016, we are continuing the same salaries, wages, and working conditions during our negotiations. We have had several productive bargaining sessions and discussions are ongoing. The Board of Education is committed to reaching a fair and sustainable agreement with the RBEA.

Litigation Update
The litigation with the Village of Brookfield is ongoing. Please see the informational letter from the Board of Education at the end of this section.

Budget
The Board of Education will conduct a Public Hearing on September 13, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., immediately before the regular Board meeting. The Board of Education will review and discuss the 2017 budget at the hearing. The tentative budget can viewed online at rbhs208.net under the Business Services tab

Board of Education
The next Board of Education meeting will be on September 13, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge. Information regarding Board meetings can be found on the RB website under the Board of Education tab or watch the meetings on www.rbtv.tv

Informational Letter from the Board of Education
August 24, 2016

Dear RBHS Students, Families, Staff and Community,

Last week, District leaders met with leaders of the Village of Brookfield in our continuing effort to reach a settlement to build a parking lot and relocated tennis courts on school property. We presented the Village with a new plan that we strongly believe presents a positive solution to the concerns of the Village Board and members of the Hollywood community. Unfortunately, the Village Trustees rejected our compromise out of hand.

As part of the long-term effort to modernize our school and its facilities, the District renovated its athletic facilities and sought to build a parking lot on school property. Originally, the District planned to build a 150-space lot and move its tennis courts offsite. However, in response to feedback from the community, particularly our partners at the Hollywood Elementary School, the District revised its plans to instead move the tennis courts next to the elementary school and build a 91-space parking lot adjacent to the parking on Rockefeller Avenue, which the District leases from the Village of Brookfield.

In 2014, the District took this plan to the Village of Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission. After a collaborative and cooperative process that involved the District conducting extensive traffic and parking studies, as well as installing a $600,000 enhanced storm water retention system, the Zoning Commission unanimously approved the District's plan. Without explanation, the Village Board of Trustees voted to deny approval of the plan. The District then pursued its right to appeal the Village's denial to the courts.

What does this compromise entail?

Our compromise plan includes a much smaller parking lot consisting of 63 spaces. The west side of the parking lot and the tennis courts would be shielded from view by landscaping. A set back of 25 feet from Hollywood Avenue would also provide a sizable green space accessible to the community and include a row of trees that would be planted in the parkway to further improve residents' view. The District would also provide increased traffic controls during special events and at other peak traffic times for an orderly and safe traffic flow. This plan represents a true improvement for the community and goes a long way toward meeting the needs of the District.

You can see renderings here:

Artistic Renderings of the Compromise Plan:
Street View from Northwest
Aerial View from Southwest

Why is this compromise important?

Additional parking is vital to the District's ability to provide a robust educational experience for our students, to attract exceptional staff, to provide access to parents, and to serve as a hub for programs and events benefiting the broader community. It will also help to keep people from parking on the streets in the Hollywood area.

Because the District has no parking of its own, students, parents and staff routinely complain about the lack of adequate parking. This problem is even more pronounced for students who work after school, participate in extra-curricular activities or take time to meet with teachers outside of school hours. We have also received complaints from members of the community who visit the school for programming sponsored by the YMCA, Brookfield Little League, Triton College, recreational, theatrical and musical groups, and many others.

This issue will only worsen with time. District enrollment has grown significantly in recent years, and is projected to do so well into the future. In 2000, we served about 1,000 students. This past academic year, we served more than 1,600.

We are extremely grateful to the Village and the Zoo for providing opportunities to the District to lease parking, but we cannot rely solely on agreements that are uncertain in the long-term and sap District resources. The Village is now threatening not to renew the Rockefeller parking lease next year. The lot leased to the District by the Zoo is often closed to District parking when the zoo determines it needs the lot and the lease is only on a yearly basis. All of this pushes parking and traffic into the Hollywood neighborhood in an uncontrolled manner and underscores how important it is that the District build parking that we control ourselves.

We also know that the neighboring community is concerned about increased traffic and congestion, as well as the visual appeal of the neighborhood. We have taken a number of steps to address these concerns, including canceling the lease of a semi-pro football team. We think this new plan further reflects our commitment to providing a solution that is beneficial to everyone in our community.

Where do we go from here?

The District has provided a compromise plan that partially serves the needs of the District and fully addresses the interests of the community, including the Hollywood area. We do this out of a sincere desire to act as a good neighbor, and because we know that the District community is far better served by a speedy resolution than by a lengthy court battle at the cost of our taxpayers and the Village's taxpayers.

We will take every opportunity to demonstrate to the Village Board that this compromise is in everyone's best interest. We will seek your support as we urge the Village to reconsider its position.

Cordially,

Board of Education

Principal's Message

Welcome to the 2016 - 2017 school year! RB's Student Association, along with Cheer Team and other athletes, lined up to give the traditional RB welcome as freshman students entered the building, heading to their Freshman Orientation. It was great having the RB building come alive again with the return of students. We are looking forward to a successful school year, filled with positive changes and boundless learning opportunities.

This year we have started a new student group called the Student Advisory Board. The S tudent Advisory Board consists of over 20 students from grades 10-12, who meet bi-monthly with building Administrators, to discuss school issues, concerns, initiatives, and events. Members will become familiar with current plans of the Administration and provide feedback. We are very excited to learn from one another to continue to enhance RB!

We wish all of our RB students and families a very happy and safe Labor Day weekend.

Technology Spotlight
Second Year of 1:1 at RB
At residency this summer, all freshman students were given Google Chromebooks as we move into the second year of our 1:1 technology initiative at RB. During the second day of school, freshmen received technology training in each of their classes to learn how to effectively use their new technology. As a part of the technology training, English 9 teachers led students in creating color-coded folders within Google Drive. Freshman students now have an organization system within their Google Drive that is matched to our Executive Functioning curriculum, supporting the development of executive functions in the brain. Research shows a significant link between work on developing executive functions in students and overall academic success.  Teachers continue to work on developing new and innovative lessons utilizing the Chromebooks in and out of the classroom.

Parent Technology Series
The next Parent Technology Series workshop will be held September 26 at 6:00 p.m. in the Little Theater. This series is for all freshman parents looking for more information and support with regard to the 1:1 Technology Initiative at RB.

Immunization Requirements for Senior and Freshman Students
All senior students are required to show proof of receiving two doses of the meningococcal conjugate vaccination (MCV) unless the first dose was administered after 16 years of age. In this case, only one dose after 16 years of age is required. Students who do not provide the proper documentation of this vaccination by Friday, October 14, will be excluded from school.

Additionally, all freshman and transfer students must have a current physical on file and be in compliance with all required immunizations. Students who do not provide the proper documentation of this vaccination by Friday, October 14, will be excluded from school. Please contact your health care provider with any questions. For more information, please visit the RBHS website .
Incoming Freshman Bulldogs - Class of 2021 Registration and Placement Test Information
The Illinois State Board of Education recently replaced the PARCC assessment with the SAT for all high school juniors. In order to best prepare our students for this state assessment, Riverside Brookfield High School has decided to switch from using the EXPLORE test for the placement exam to the PSAT 8 for the class of 2021 and beyond. In order for us to receive the students' test results in time for students to register for classes for the 2017-18 school year, the placement exam will be given on October 1.

Saturday, October 1
High School Placement Exam at Riverside Brookfield High School
8:00 a.m. - approximately 11:30 a.m. for regular testing
Students with extended time will finish later depending on their accommodations.

The front doors to the main entrance just east of the football field and south of the Brookfield Zoo (labeled Door A) will open at 7:30 a.m. In order to help us determine the most appropriate classes for freshmen, we require that ALL incoming 9th graders take a placement exam. All students should bring two #2 pencils and a calculator. Attendance on this date is extremely important since no make-up date is possible with the new exam.

Contact April Englehart in Student Services at ext. 2190 with questions.

You must complete the online registration form by Friday, September 23, in order for your student to take the placement exam. Please refer to the email sent from your student's school for instructions on how to complete the online form. This information can also be found on the RBHS website . You must also reside in District 208 in order to test at RB.

  Grade Level Assemblies
During the first week of school, we held grade level assemblies and met with each class in order to communicate important information regarding attendance and discipline procedures, including changes to the code of conduct applicable to all students. We also stressed the importance of demonstrating their Bulldog Pride by being a leader at RB through involvement in extracurricular activities and making responsible decisions to ensure academic success. These presentations can be found on our website under Student Assemblies

Advanced Placement (AP) Achievement Results
Last year 540 students at RB were enrolled in AP courses, and 1,199 AP exams were administered to RB students. Seventy-two percent of the students who took AP exams last year earned a passing score of 3 or better. Data shows that not only do more RB students take AP courses each year, but more of them pass the exams for those courses each year as well. Additionally, 32 percent of our 540 AP students earned the distinction of AP Scholar.

New and Improved Bulldog Buck Incentive Program
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Students will continue to earn Bulldog Bucks for positive behavior, as well as receive attendance rewards during lunch periods. This year Bulldog Bucks will be distributed through the HERO system by awarding positive points for student behavior that exhibits one of the six pillars of Character Counts! Students and parents can monitor their positive points by logging onto the website https://access.heropowered.com/. Students and parents will need their activation key that was distributed during residency. If you need this information again, please email Dave Mannon, Assistant Principal of Student Affairs, at [email protected]. You can also download the HERO application on your phone.

  Extra-Curricular Activity Information
Our focus this year will be to increase our daily student attendance and engagement percentages through an enhanced Bulldog Pride initiative. Through the Bulldog Pride initiative, students will have immediate access to the activity website which will outline membership and meeting times. The RBHS website also contains information about each extra-curricular activity. We encourage all of our students to get involved, ask questions, and sign up for an activity that they have interests in this year. To assist students with their extracurricular choices, an Activity Fair will occur on September 12 thru September 16 during all lunch periods in the cafeteria.
Homecoming Week, September 19-23
Homecoming week is a time for students to share in their school pride through selected grade level competitions, the crowning of a King and Queen, followed by the Football Game and Homecoming Dance on Saturday. As we draw closer to Homecoming Week, we wanted to communicate updated procedures for the Football Game and Dance, as well as review handbook and safety expectations to ensure students, parents, and the community have an enjoyable Homecoming experience.

Football Game and Kennelly Stadium reminders:
  • If students have purchased the 2016-2017 Activity Fee Pass, they will be allowed entry with their current school ID. Students who fail to bring their ID will pay full admission price at the gate. There is no re-entry to the stadium for students.
  • Students who are dropped off at the stadium should utilize the drop off area, which is near the south gate on Ridgewood Road.
  Homecoming Week and Dance Reminders:
  • Tickets for the Homecoming Dance can be purchased for $10.00 each at the door. Students, who have purchased a 2016-2017 Activity Fee Pass, will be allowed entry to the Dance with their current school ID.

  • Students are expected to adhere to all school rules at the dance and are not allowed re-entry into the dance. Please refer to pages 8-9 and 30-33 in the Student Handbook.

  Annual Safety Drills
The safety of all RB students and staff is our top priority, so building safety drills were held successfully during the first two weeks of school. Our first fire drill was held during the first week. During our second week of school, we held our first lock down and tornado drill, along with the bus evacuation drill, which was held in Wellness classes. A job well done was accomplished by all RB students, faculty, and staff with our fire drill, particularly since Door G was blocked off due to construction.

Drop Offs and Pick Ups
As you drop off your students in the morning, please utilize the main entrance doors on Golf Road, labeled Door A. We ask families to please pull forward to the main entrance and use the turn around after your student exits the vehicle. As a safety precaution, we ask our students and guests to use the appropriate sidewalks and crosswalks. If students ride their bicycles to school, we advise them to secure their bicycles to the bicycle racks located on the south side of the building on Ridgewood Road. We are also asking students and parents who drive in the morning to watch their speed on Golf Road as several students will be crossing the street at that time. Door G will be closed until further notice for construction. Students may enter the building through Doors E and F on Ridgewood Road.

 Hero/Attendance
As an additional intervention and to increase student attendance, the Dean's Office has begun Tardy scans. For students who arrive late after the first period bell, the Dean will scan their ID and issue the appropriate consequence according to the Tardy Policy within the Student Handbook. Students who are late to class will also need to scan their student ID at one of the HERO stations throughout the building.
  Upcoming Testing at RB

Bulldog Athletics: Fall Sports Update
All fall sports are in full swing as teams begin preparing for their 2016 seasons. We have had over 400 total athletes sign up this fall, using our new online registration system. We thank parents for their patience as we transition to this new system that will eventually create a quicker and more accurate list of all athletes and parents to increase efficiency and future communication.

Some of the teams will be traveling to off campus sites for practice and games due to the tennis court and parking lot project being in litigation with the Village of Brookfield. Tennis will be using the Oak Brook Tennis Center again this fall.

Our Main Gym is under construction until the middle of October. The Gym will be completely redone with new flooring, bleachers, speakers, scoreboard, lighting, and ceiling tiles. Volleyball will be competing in our East Gym and Fieldhouse for their practices and matches.

We will continue with our website called 8to18.com, which we launched last August to communicate athletic information to the public. This site will have schedules, rosters, playing sites, pictures, and many links to important sites for all our stakeholders.

Riverside Brookfield offers the following sports in the fall: Girls Cross Country, Girls Volleyball, Girls Tennis, Girls Swimming and Diving, Girls Golf, Dance, Cheerleading, Football, Boys Cross Country, Boys Soccer, and Boys Golf. Below is a brief update from each sport:

Boys Sports
Boys Cross Country  - Coach Larry Forberg is excited to see how this team works together and competes throughout the year. The hard work this summer will hopefully push them through the season to new heights.

Boys Golf  - Coach Jim Festle and Assistant Coach Dan Herbeck are both new this year and look forward to training our young golfers.

Football  - Coach Brendan Curtain and staff have been preparing their Bulldogs for a season of uncertainty. With the loss of several key players at key positions, there is plenty of competition to see who will fill those spots. Last year's playoff run was awesome and the hope is, as always, a Conference Championship and another deep State playoff run.

Boys Soccer  - New Head Coach Ivek Halik is excited for his first year as Head Boys Soccer Coach and is expecting a strong season for all levels.

Girls Sports
Cheer  - Coach Rachel Huedepohl has the team working hard on their routines and continuing their preparation after a successful summer session. They will compete in the medium division for IHSA this year, and their goal is a top ten finish at State and a Conference Championship.

Girls Cross Country  - Coach Brennan Denny says the underclassman will again push the veteran runners, which will make the team even stronger, as they make a run at the Conference Championship and a Top 5 State Qualifying team.

Dance - They have begun practicing and have a strong competition routine in the making. Coach Madelyn Doyle is in her first year and brings a wealth of dance background to the program.

Girls Golf - Coach Mark Gouwens says the overall athleticism of the team has improved, which should improve the results and competitiveness of this year's team.

Girls Swim  - Coach Mike Laurich is excited to start his second year as Head Coach and will have former RB swimming star, Graham Risley, as his new Assistant Coach. There are lots of underclassman to climb the ladder to a higher conference finish in 2016.

Girls Tennis  - Coach Bob Hegner's team is adjusting to travel every day to the Oak Brook Tennis Center, which will be their home this fall for practice and matches. We have a new Assistant Coach, Blake Schafer, and he is encouraged with the new players. The team is still accepting players that might like to tryout.

Girls Volleyball  - They have had very competitive tryouts again and hope to duplicate last year's MSC Conference Championship year (11-1) and compete for back-to-back Conference Championships.

Staff Recognition
Kristi Sterling, Science Teacher
Kristi Sterling, a master's student in the Advanced Inquiry Program from Miami University's Project Dragonfly, traveled to Namibia in August 2016, where she studied ongoing research projects, such as radio tracking, cheetah conservation and ecosystem management as well as the design of school and community programs. More information about Sterling's 2016 course can be found at http://www.earthexpeditions.org. Click Namibia.

Kristi stated, "W e stayed at the Cheetah Conservation Fund and learned so much about cheetah biology and the unique conservation issues of Africa. We also learned a lot about their local education programs, which are the key to saving species in Africa since most local people have almost no knowledge about the animals living in their own backyard. It was an amazing, life-changing experience, and I cannot wait to share it with all of my students as I incorporate it into my science curriculum!
