Superintendent's Message

Dear RBHS Students, Families, Staff, and Community,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer vacation. In a few short weeks, we will be preparing for the start of the 2014-2015 school year. Be sure to schedule your appointment for Residency.

Many things have been happening at the District since the end of school. We are correcting our pool issues with the help of Wight & Company and Berg Engineering. The latest endeavor will be installing a supplemental unit over the spectator area. Our engineer has approved this plan, and we anticipate that this will correct the air flow level to the design specifications.

Life Safety/Capital projects were presented at a public Facilities Committee meeting that was held on June 24. Many community members attended and presented their comments and concerns about the proposed parking lot and relocation of the tennis courts. The information gathered at this meeting was submitted to the Board and our DLA architect. Another public Facilities Committee meeting is planned for late July or early August. For more information check the website under the Board of Education tab - 2013 Facilities Assessment.

The First Avenue Bike Path Committee has been meeting monthly. Board Member Mike Welch and I have been attending these regular meetings regarding the Bike Path project along First Avenue at Commissioner Tobolski's office. Earlier this month we were notified that Cook County pledged $100,000 in funding for the path that will begin at Ridgewood Road and run to 31st Street. A proposal was given to Senator Martin Sandoval to request IDOT funding to help finance the remaining legs of the bike path.

At the July Board of Education meeting, the Board approved a tentative budget for fiscal year 2015. The budget is available for review on the RB website under the District - Business Services tab. The Board also listened to concerns from parents and students about RB's Theater program. The Board is reviewing a proposal to return the Fall Play, which was cut in 2011 when the referendum failed. For more information on the July Board of Education meeting, please check the RB website under the Board of Education tab or you can watch the meeting on www.rbtv.tv.

Cordially,

Principal's Message

As I begin my first school year as Principal of Riverside Brookfield High School, I am dedicated to continuing to build strong relationships with the students, staff, parents, and community to assist all students in achieving their very best. Together, we will accomplish this goal by continuing to set high academic expectations for all students and by providing a safe and supportive learning environment.

During the remaining summer break, please encourage your sons and daughters to actively participate in various learning activities. A daily 15-20 minute activity that stimulates their mind will ease the back-to-school transition.

Reading a book from the suggested summer reading list, visiting a museum, reading the newspaper, or brushing up math skills at www.khanacademy.org are enriching options.

The staff is excited to welcome the class of 2018 to the Bulldog Community in addition to all of the returning students on the first day of school, August 13.

We look forward to partnering together with you to make the 2014 - 2015 school year the best yet!

Kristin Smetana

Required Residency Information

All families that have students enrolled at Riverside Brookfield High School for the upcoming school year are required to attend the Annual Residency Event in order to provide documentation verifying their residency within the boundaries of RBHS. Students must also attend this event with their parent/guardian in order to receive their handbook, class schedule, and school ID.

Visit our residency website for additional information and to schedule your appointment.

This website also contains information regarding student accident insurance, an explanation of the course schedule change request process, and the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Registry Form if you wish to be notified before a pesticide application. The free and reduced lunch application will also be posted on this website as soon as they become available. Please contact the Main Office if you need a hard copy of any of these forms.

Summer Reading lnformation

The English Department has two levels of summer reading: required reading and suggested reading. Students enrolled in either AP Literature and Composition or AP Language and Composition are the only students that are required to read an assigned book. Students in these classes should expect assessments on the required reading within the first week of school in August.

All other students can read from a list of suggested titles. This means that students may choose one or more titles from those suggested, but they will not be assessed as part of their English grades. The suggested reading list is divided into two parts: Books for the College Bound and High Interest Reads. More information, along with the suggested reading list, can be found here
PSAT/NMSQT Test Information

On Wednesday, October 15, interested sophomores and juniors can take the PSAT/NMSQT exam at RB. This is an optional test that serves as practice for the SAT and qualifies juniors to enter scholarship programs offered through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Sophomores may only take this exam as practice and scores are only used for their own planning and informational purposes. Students can register in the Business Office between September 3 and September 19 with no exceptions. The cost to register for the exam is $20.

Excel Edge will once again be offering their PSAT 240 test preparation program to qualified juniors who are interested in taking the exam. Classes will be held at RB and run from August 27 until October 8. The cost of the program is $265. Students must register in the Business Office for the PSAT 240 class by August 15. Contact Mrs. Carey, Assistant Testing Director, for additional information.
