Superintendent's Message

Dear RBHS Students, Families, Staff and Community,

I hope you are somewhere warm reading this newsletter, or at least thinking about somewhere warm. The weather this winter has definitely thrown us a curve ball. The District has had to cancel classes four times in January.  Who knows what the upcoming months hold for us?

It is never easy to make the decision to cancel school, but the safety of our students and staff is always our first priority. Discussions are occurring with the School Board about how to amend the District Calendar and make up the student attendance days. Please see the article below for more information.

Cordially,

Kevin Skinkis, Ed.D.
Emergency Closings - District Calendar Amended
The School Board amended this year's calendar at the January 14 meeting to account for school being closed on January 6 and 7. Classes will be in session on Monday, February 17 (President's Day), and Monday, March 3, (Pulaski Day). We apologize for any inconvenience this causes for your family due to activities you have planned. If your plans cannot be changed, please contact the Attendance Office at 708-442-8407 in order to excuse an absence.

Dr. Skinkis will be providing the School Board with options to consider at their February 11 meeting for how the student attendance days can be made up from our most recent closing on January 27-28. We are at a point where we are running out of scheduled holidays that we can substitute as student attendance days. One option that will be considered is using the emergency days built into the District Calendar. Using these days would result in extending the school year, moving final exams and possibly having to move graduation. Further communication about this topic will follow as soon as possible.
2014-2015 Calendar
The Board of Education approved the District Calendar for the 2014-15 school year at its January 28 meeting. A full version of the Calendar, including the scheduled breaks and holidays, can be viewed on the RB website under the "Parents" tab.
Parent Questions Sought for RBTV Series
Nathan Perez, a student television producer at RB, is producing a series with Superintendent Dr. Skinkis called "Focal Point," for broadcast on RBTV.

The show content is driven by parent questions submitted to Nathan via email. Dr. Skinkis and Nathan will address questions on the program. The questions should focus on issues and events that affect RB.

Please email your questions to [email protected] by February 7.

Principal's Message

As you will see from this month's news, students and staff have been incredibly productive and will continue to be throughout the month of February. They are not hibernating during this cold snap, that's for certain! As parents and guardians, you will find an abundance of opportunities to further your learning during the month. At the two upcoming PTO meetings, you can learn practical information to increase your student's academic, social-emotional, extracurricular and college/career success. In this edition of Hallways, you will find information on how the students will also have several chances to learn new skills and strategies to cope with life's personal and school challenges.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Hallways. You are sure to be impressed with all that our wonderful students and staff are accomplishing.

Go, Bulldogs!

Students Attend Grade Level Assemblies with Principal
and Assistant Principal

In mid-January, Principal Bylsma and Assistant Principal John Passarella discussed goals for the students and what progress they are making on school culture and safety issues, such as bullying, verbal aggression, tardiness and other infractions that disrupt the learning environment. Mr. Passarella reviewed safety procedures, brainstorming with students what they should do if a lockdown or an emergency were to occur when they were not in class. He addressed what they should do if they heard about or witnessed something that threatened the safety of the school.

We are proud of how our students have partnered with us to significantly improve the climate of the school by embedding the Six Pillars of Character Counts! into their decisions and actions. Students are improving their relationships, stepping up to help eliminate bullying and sharing information to keep the school free of drugs, theft and violence.

In addition, during the assemblies, Principal Bylsma shared with students what research says about achievement and how that information can help each of them succeed at RB and in life. She reviewed the concepts of respect and rapport, educational engagement, reflection, grit and resiliency, and metacognition, which is the process of thinking about the way you approach your schoolwork. She also shared an inspirational story of a teenager who is an example of how to rise above challenges that appear insurmountable. If you are interested in the content of the assembly, please see the Power Point and notes on the website by clicking here. Senior Wins 4th Place in National STEM Competition
RB senior Nicholas Kenealy won 4th place in the national Samsung Mobile App Academy contest. He received a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone. This amazing accomplishment resulted from a summer academy he attended along with junior Tim Walsh.

Now in its second year, the Samsung Mobile App Academy exposed high school students to the growing possibilities of mobile application development and provided the opportunity to create app concepts that are relevant to them and their communities. Samsung Mobile collaborated with highly recognized engineering universities to host six two-day mobile application academies for top performing high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Student Recognition
On January 31, the school held a ceremony for our second Student of the Quarter recognition program. At RB, we enjoy celebrating the good choices our students make, from the small daily courtesies to the astonishing, large contributions. It is important to stop and recognize these positive actions to show our appreciation and to inspire others to follow suit. In order to become a Student of the Quarter, each student had to earn the admiration of the teachers from a specific department by excelling in two areas: academics and character. This month the PBS Committee asked staff to pick students who exemplify the Character Counts! pillars of Caring and Citizenship.

J. Kyle Braid Athlete Leader Program

New J. Kyle Braid Athlete Leaders Selected

Congratulations go to Keri Burke, Bella McGuire, Ryan Swift and Dean Zigulich, who were chosen to attend intensive leadership training at the JKB Ranch in Colorado, along with peers from around the country. The selection process included completing an application, submitting letters of recommendation, and being interviewed by a team of adults and current JKB Leaders. Nicole LaBelle and David Pribyl Pierdinock were selected as 1st alternates, and Megan Calby and Zach (Butch) Witken were selected as 2nd alternates.

According to sponsors Jenna Osburn and Wendy Cassens, "The JKB group is so excited to build on its mission with these new recruits and looks forward to watching them develop their already solid leadership in our building."

Conflict Resolution and Negotiating Skills Training

The JKB Conflict Resolution Team is preparing to teach its 2nd freshman lesson of the year. The team is made up of sophomore, junior and senior students who have demonstrated strong leadership skills and good moral character. In the Fall, every RB freshman was trained in Conflict Resolution Skills. School discipline data shows that verbal altercations have been reduced by 90% over four years as a result of this program.

On February 25, all freshmen students will be trained in Negotiation Skills. The student leaders will teach a 35-minute lesson on how to productively and efficiently negotiate so that all parties involved come to a workable solution. The ultimate goal is to provide our freshmen students with the skills to be independent and productive problem solvers.

JKB Students Teach Workshop at Komarek

Komarek students attempt the Log Transfer Team Challenge
On January 9, RB's JKB student leaders conducted a leadership summit for 8th grade students at Komarek School. The topic was the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. "The leadership summit was a great success. It was powerful to see students teaching other students and it was neat to observe the 8th graders apply the skills immediately in each of the team challenges," commented sponsor Jenna Osburn.
RB Student Leaders Part of "Watch My Feet"
On January 18, an energetic, innovative group of teen leaders called "Watch My Feet" performed for all freshmen Wellness classes. RB students Jasmine Richter, Kennedy Mistretta and Breuna Wilson are members of this dynamic LeaderShop performance group. This unique ensemble composed of diverse students from four area high schools brings the message of hope and leadership to other young people in the community.

Sophomores/Juniors to Hear Motivational Speaker
On February 19, dynamic motivational speaker Milton Creagh will be presenting to our sophomores and juniors during 6th period. Milton's presentation emphasizes age-appropriate topics such as alcohol/substance abuse and character building.

The appearance is funded by the Illinois Elks State Association's Drug Awareness program and grants received from the Elks National Foundation. We are fortunate to have been offered this special opportunity for our students at no cost to the school. You can find more information about Milton at biggmilt.com.
Student Association News
Custodian Appreciation Day was January 30. This is the 2nd year the Student Association and PBS teamed up to celebrate and thank our amazing custodial staff for their hard work and dedication to RB. They served lunch to the day crew and dinner for the evening crew as a small token of our gratitude for all they do to make RB a special place to come to work and learn.

We continue to award 5th hour classes who are wearing RB Blue-n-White. Once a month, on an announced Friday, the Student Association Executive Board asks 5th period teachers to record their class percentage dressed in spirit wear. We award each semester winner with a pizza party.  The 1st semester winner was Mrs. Marelli's 5th period class with 100% participation twice during 1st semester.

The 2nd Blood Drive of the school year will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Students may sign-up to donate blood during their study hall, Wellness class and in lunches February 17, 18 and 19, or students may see Ms. Ziola. The goal is to collect at least 120 pints of blood. Requirements: student must be in good health, weigh over 110 lbs. and be 16 years old (with a parent permission slip) or older.

Please continue to donate your Pop Tops in the collection bins for the Ronald McDonald House. We are getting closer to our goal of one million.
NHS Members Demonstrate Pillars of Citizenship and Caring
by Providing Relief for Tornado Victims

Our National Honor Society members are collecting items desperately needed by residents of Washington, IL. They will be driving to Washington on February 15 to deliver the goods to a relief organization. Students and staff are invited to remove a heart from the poster in the cafeteria and purchase the items needed. Please drop off your donations in Lindsay Mynaugh's classroom, Room 208, before February 15. Parents who are interested in getting involved may contact Ms. Mynaugh at [email protected].
PTO, Students and Staff Gear Up for
Day of Service - April 26, 2014
It's hard to think about spring clean-up in subzero weather, but a group of RB students are doing just that. The Student Committee for the 2014 Day of Service held its first meeting on January 21 to begin planning for the annual event on Saturday, April 26, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Student registration will be held during the week of March  10. Participating on the Student Committee is an excellent opportunity to enhance leadership skills while promoting community service. Anyone interested in joining the Committee is welcome to attend the next meeting on Thursday, January 30, 7:30 a.m., in Room 201. For more information about student involvement, please contact PTO President Pam Powers at [email protected]

There are many opportunities for parents to help, too, including being part of the PTO planning team, helping set up/clean up on the day of the event, being a team leader/chaperone for individual projects, serving refreshments, or providing food or monetary donations. Interested parents or staff, please contact Dina Sanchez, Day of Service Chair, at [email protected].

Last year, more than 225 students and 60 staff and parents participated. The Day of Service began a number of years ago as a way to thank the community for its support of the school. Students help with public service projects in each town or village within the school district. Last year, projects included picking up litter, mulching, clearing buckthorn from the forest preserve, painting, planting public gardens, and other needed public services in Broadview, Brookfield, LaGrange Park, North Riverside and Riverside.

The Student Committee played a large role in promoting the event to students, staff, clubs and athletic teams. They also created posters, informational signs and coordinated the design of the Day of Service logo with the Art Department. They also assisted in registering students.
Farewell to Yogi

If you happened to notice a large dog with a thick black coat in the halls last year, he was a very important "staff member," who passed away on January 23.

Yogi, a 140 pound Newfoundland, was part of RB's ground-breaking dog therapy program. Until two years ago, RB was the only Illinois high school with a recognized dog therapy program. Because of multiple health problems Yogi was not at RB this school year.

Yogi's service included calming distressed students, and staff found comfort in his massive gentleness. Yogi's favorite place at RB was in the halls, especially during passing periods. Belly up, inviting petting and not caring about the traffic jam, he created a sense of fun, often bringing out the best in many of us.
Attention Seniors: Triton College Placement Testing
Coming to RB

The ACT Compass Test is required for all students who will be registering at a community college. This test provides placement and diagnostic information on math, reading and writing skills. ACT Compass is an un-timed, computerized test that helps colleges evaluate your skills and place you into appropriate courses.

If you are a senior who is interested in attending Triton, please note this information:
  • Testing Date - Tuesday, February 4
  • By taking the test in February, you will have an opportunity to retake the test and try to earn a higher score.
  • ACT Compass is not used like a traditional test. There is generally no "passing score." Rather, ACT Compass scores indicate areas in which you are strong and areas in which you may need help. Thus, ACT Compass can identify problems in major subject areas before they disrupt your educational progress, giving you the opportunity to prepare more effectively for needed courses.
Technology Update

On Institute Day, January 24, eight teachers on the Technology Team led a professional development session about new technological resources that teachers can incorporate into their classroom. Neil Dughetti, Michele Koehler, Dan Mancoff, Kirsten Rusinak, Patty Sarkady, Kristi Sterling, Bridget Wilmot, and Suzanne Zimmerman presented sessions including Chrome Apps and websites, Screencasts, using Google Docs in the classroom and using Prezi, among other topics.
