Mayor and Council Proclaim June 2014 National Drug Court Month & City Rep. Acosta awards the Honorable Robert S. Anchondo & County Criminal Court at Law No. 2 the ESTRELLA AWARD

Judge Robert S. Anchondo created the first DWI Drug Court Intervention and Treatment Program in the State of Texas on November 3, 2004.

The mission of the DWI Drug Court Intervention and Treatment Program is to enhance public safety, strive to reduce recidivism of alcohol and drug offenders through a cost effective integrated continuum of care and a judicially supervised regime of treatment and innovative case management.

The DWI Drug Court Program continues to save the City of El Paso millions of dollars per year by providing treatment to offenders as opposed to housing them in the jail system.

In ten years, Judge Anchondo has had 435 participants enter the DWI Drug Court Program and has graduated 300 participants in that same time frame.

In ten years, the DWI Drug Court Intervention and Treatment Program has maintained a 90% success rate and a 10% recidivism rate.

On March 25, 2014, the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nationally recognized the DWI Drug Court Intervention and Treatment Program as a NCDC Academy Court. The National Recognition was presented by Judge J. Michael Kavanaugh of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP). The DWI Drug Court Intervention and Treatment Program will have this recognition for the next three years and all DWI Drug Courts nationally will come to El Paso to be trained by this court.
