"City Representative Acosta to

Request Fast Track Process

for ADA Accessible Projects"

El Paso, Texas - On Tuesday, September 2, 2014 Rep. Acosta will request support from Mayor and Council to direct the City Manager and City Attorney to develop an ordinance, process, or policy that would expedite and make it easier for all businesses that do not have ADA bathrooms, to be able to get plans approved and permits for ADA bathrooms and other ADA amenities such as ramps.

Representative Acosta believes a fast track ADA conversion process along with implementing a cost sensitive timeline will allow the business owners to bring all other items that pertain to the respective building, that may not be in compliance, into compliance. In addition, Representative Acosta request that the process should make it reasonable and with enough time so that businesses are able to secure loans for each phase of compliance. The policy shall be complete with businesses being offered assistance on revolving loans, whether from Accin Texas, Community Development Building Grants (CDBG), or other agencies, that are available for these types of construction should also be included in the ADA process.

"My initiative to provide businesses a better faster method to convert non-ADA facilities to ADA facility stems from the challenges the current owners are facing today with an absent system at the City," said Rep. Acosta. ADA conversion challenges, that have caused business owners such as Mr. Martin Rios, restaurant owner of the Lunchbox on Montana setbacks from refurbishing the property's restrooms to ADA compliance in a fast and cost effective manner.

"I was very pleased to know Mr. Rios was going to refurbish his restrooms up to ADA compliance, because I hold my monthly communities at his restaurant. However, due to members of the public requesting immediate ADA compliant restroom accessibility I will postpone my monthly meetings until I find another location and/or Mr. Rios finishes construction," stated Rep. Acosta.

The Lunchbox restaurant on 3623 Buckner off Montana is locally owned and operated by family. The Rios' family purchased the property on blight condition and refurbished the property. Their investment was an economic driver that has driven more small business to come to the area. The Rios' like many other local business owners invest in our community and are the back bone to El Paso's economy
