ACT Scores are in, and we're seeing improvement across the board!

The Tennessee Department of Education released 2017 ACT scores this week. We are excited to announce that SCS saw growth in nearly every subject area for our students! Across the District, scores improved at 21 high schools, and more students earned scores that qualify them for the HOPE scholarship. Open Enrollment starts October 30!

Open Enrollment for health benefits is right around the corner! The enrollment period begins October 30 , so keep an eye on your email in the coming weeks for additional information. Once you get all the details, be sure to complete your Open Enrollment information by November 17 to lock in your 2018-19 benefits.
Teacher pay increases are on the way!

Teachers, don't forget to send your transcripts to Compensation by October 13 to earn a pay increase for your advanced degree! See the flyer for more details.

Performance based-raises for teachers also begin soon! If summative conferences are held and scores are signed off on in TNCompass  before  October 17 , your raise will be on the first November paycheck and retroactive to the first day of school. All staff must work at least 121 instructional days to receive an official evaluation score and performance-based raises. 
Want to earn money for your school? Join us at the 2017 Race for Education on October 28!

Come out to the University of Memphis FedEx Technology Institute on October 28 at 9 a.m. for the 17th annual Race for Education . The family-friendly 5k walk-run will raise funds that will go directly to schools with participating students, families and staff. After the race, stay for the Family Health & Safety Expo. The expo will include a student art contest that awards cash prizes for the best student artwork. The expo will also feature health and wellness vendors, educational support organizations, area colleges and universities, STEM resources and more. Register online by October 20 to receive a free race shirt.

The Optional Schools application process will be a fully online process for the 2018-19 school year. Our goal is to create a process that helps improve access and opportunities for all students. Thousands of families choose to apply for our Optional schools every year, including many working right here in SCS, so it's important that any decisions we make about the new process are based on feedback from those we serve. Our Hispanic Heritage celebration is almost here!

Come out to Hickory Ridge Middle on October 17 as SCS celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month ! We'll have plenty of food, fun, information and entertainment for the whole family as we celebrate the rich culture of Hispanic families in our community. Vendors will be on site to share resources and information about how to get more involved with the Spanish-speaking community in Shelby County.
Ready for the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut?

To help prepare for an emergency earthquake event, all SCS schools are encouraged to participate in a regional earthquake drill, the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut. On October 19 at 10:19 a.m ., all schools should participate in the drill as one of two mandatory annual earthquake drills. In addition to the drill, schools should incorporate earthquake preparedness into their classroom lessons for the day. Check out these resources for making the ShakeOut an interactive learning experience for your students.
Learn about life-saving community resources at the Suicide Prevention Expo!

Join us on Saturday, October 21, at Hickory Ridge Middle School from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for the fifth annual Suicide Prevention Expo, Speak Up: Let’s Be Heard sponsored by Coordinated School Health. We’re raising local awareness of mental health and wellness resources in the Mid-South community! The event will include door prizes, entertainment and refreshments. (Get the Spanish flyer here .)
