More and more professionals are utilizing Teletherapy via smartphone, internet and other electronic means to assist in the delivery of services. This training will look at ethical and legal issues in this area. We will also review the requirements of federal and state laws specific to addiction treatment. This training will provide detailed information on how professionals can provide services face-to-face and via teletherapy and comply with all state and federal laws relevant to substance use disorders or when the issues are co-occurring.

We will review the differences in HIPAA laws and CFR 42 and the requirements that must be followed by all professionals. We will also review the limitations of Tele-therapy, issues with practice across state lines and ethical and legal considerations with substance use disorders. Recovery of a Lifetime

On February 7, 2010, trailing 10-6 to the Indianapolis Colts at halftime of Super Bowl XLIV, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton made one of the gutsiest calls in Super Bowl history when they started the second half with an onside kick called Ambush. Chris Reis, a back-up safety, wasn't supposed to recover the onside kick, but when the squiggling ball bounced off the chest of a Colts player, Chris pounced on the ball-and held on for everything he was worth. His recovery changed the tenor of the game and propelled the Saints to their first Super Bowl victory. Watching the Super Bowl game that day in Miami was Chris' father, Mike. needed his own recovery-a recovery from his addiction to alcohol, sex, and a life filled with bad choices and poor decisions. The younger son was Chris Reis, a two-year-old who didn't understand why his father had abandoned him, and the distance between father and son remained a chasm as wide as the Grand Canyon during the boy's younger years. After his playing days at Georgia Tech, Chris won a spot on the New Orleans Saints roster. After his recovery of the onside kick in Super Bowl XLIV, there was one more recovery that needed to be made in Chris' family-his father.

The Importance of Sharing Your Story in Breaking the Stigma of Addiction
Often some of our deepest personal problems are rooted in something we can't control-genetics and the dysfunctional family behavioral patterns that came before us.  Many of us come from family backgrounds of addiction, sexual abuse, divorce, domestic violence, selfishness, and greed.  It effects all of our relationships not to mention the negative impact on our jobs and finances.  If you area a person with a substance use disorder, we often use our past to justify our bad behavior and poor choices. That bad behavior becomes a model for our children and family, and our genetic predisposition helps the cycle get repeated over and over again.   We may not be able to control our past, but we can control our choices. However, the stigma of addiction prevents many afflicted by this disease from getting into treatment.  The stigma of addiction and the associated shame may be the primary reason why only 10% of people with a substance use disorder ever get into treatment.

Recovery of a Lifetime is the uplifting story of a Super Bowl hero son who inspired his father to win his battle against a lifetime of addictions...Mike and Chris Reis tell all about their dark and painful past to give others hope and to inspire them to get the help they need.  By publicly sharing their story, Mike and Chris want to help break the stigma of addiction so others can enjoy a life of freedom that only comes through long-term sobriety.
