Today we are delighted to offer you some of the most exciting and sophisticated wines being produced in the whole of the Loire valley, from the highly sought-after Domaine Guiiberteau. Romain Guiberteau gave up a career in law to take over his ancestral domaine in 1996, becoming an 8th generation winemaker; he immediately transformed the estate from an average producer to one of the very highest order. His vines, many of which are up to 80 years old, are ideally located in some of the most prestigious sites in Saumur. Since he took over, Romain has learned to harness every last drop of potential from his vines through his organic farming techniques.
The reds all possess high-toned fruit and floral aromas, with the single vineyard Arboises and
Motelles
adding an extra level of richness and complexity over the regular Saumur. Tension, a suave structure and strong minerality complete the characteristics of the reds - none of which are to be missed. Freshness and ageability are the keywords when considering his whites; orchard fruits and a chalky minerality come to the fore, while the vibrant acidity drives the finish on and on.
2014 is the first vintage for Les Moulins Blanc, and is a superb mid-level white, while the top-end Clos des Guichaux is from the chalk and limestone of Bizay (close to Breze); Breze come from the legendary clay/limestone terroir of the same name and is made from the oldest vines that the domaine owns.
Compelling, thrilling - just two of the many descriptors which come to mind when tasting these wines, the reputation of which is burgeoning with each new vintage that passes as the standard of the wines only increases. It is not for no reason that the wines of Romain Guiberteau frequently find themselves on high-end wine lists of Michelin-starred restaurants throughout France and the world!
