Dear Respected Members of the Door County Humane Society:

You have done us the honor of being members of the Door County Humane Society.  Now the DCHS Board of Directors is reaching out to you in an effort to address any confusion or consternation over events of the past 24 hours. Here is a portion of the statement made today by this Board to local media:

The Door County Humane Society (DCHS) Board of Directors has been working closely with the Door County Sheriff's Department to investigate the misappropriation of funds by its former executive director.

Board members discovered the financial problems a few days after the executive director was asked to leave the organization. Board President Marilyn Jensen contacted the Sheriff's Department, and Board members began working with the Door County Sheriff's Department in a joint investigation.

What is occurring in the criminal justice system is distinct and separate from the daily operations of the Door County Humane Society.  Here at 3475 County Road PD, more than 100 animals are receiving tender care by a trained staff. Trust and respect has been restored as the benchmark for dealing with each other.

Under the direction of Interim Director Carol Boudreau, the shelter is thriving. The organizational restructuring implemented 10 months ago now has the shelter in a much stronger position. DCHS continues to operate effectively, focusing on its mission to provide a safe haven for lost or homeless pets while working to reunite them with their owners or placing them with a new, loving family. Staff members are committed to animal well-being over all else.

Because of your support and generosity, the shelter is financially stable. Please know that enhanced financial controls are in place and your gifts to the Humane Society will be used for the care of animals, just as you expect.  As the year progresses you, as a member, will be the first to hear about several  truly new services offered to our community, the gratifying outcome of collaboration between the Door County Humane Society and local resources.  Meanwhile, rest assured that we are doing everything possible to fulfill our responsibilities to the animals and to the community.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Jensen

President, Door County Humane Society Board of Directors
