Double Up Food Bucks Arizona
Quarter 1 Progress

Wow! We've accomplished a lot in just six months...

It's hard to believe it's only been six months. We've accomplished so much together. A huge thanks and congratulations to all DFBA implementing sites and community partners helping to promote the program!

Now let's grow even more!

On one of our recent USDA FINI Grantee calls, we learned that our 66% redemption rate is good considering how young the program is. Still, we'd like to make a push to get as much of the $2,000 in outstanding tokens utilized to get more fruits and vegetables on the table and more money in the pockets of Arizona Growers! Vendor Signage is a great way to help SNAP customers spend their Double Up Food Bucks. We've developed some new Vendor Signage options to make it easy for Vendors to highlight their booth and which products are eligible. When distributing tokens to customers, please let them know which signs to look for.

We understand how much stuff vendors must pack, haul and set-up at each market, so we want to make it as easy for you as possible to have signage and tools available. Thank you to all the market managers who continue to post signs and banners for each vendor when they forget! Feel free to remind them there are a good amount of Double Up Food Bucks tokens floating around in the pockets and purses of customers that can only be spent on their products, and that signage and other promotional activities make it easier for shoppers to know which vendors accept Double Up Food Bucks.

Now that we have more participating sites than can fit on one flyer, we'll be separating it by the three main Double Up regions:
    • Maricopa and Pima County
    • Pinal County
    • Yavapai County

Double Up Food Bucks for Fresh Express Mobile Markets vs. Farmers Markets and Farm Stands

One of the key commitments we made to partners at the start of the Double Up Food Bucks program was to customize distribution, redemption, tracking and reporting approaches for each partner while maintaining program consistency and integrity.

Since Mobile Markets operate more like a grocery store than a farmers market, we have flipped our "Buy-One, Get-One" token approach in order to maximize the amount of fruits and vegetables available to SNAP customers and the economic support to Arizona growers.

Fresh Express Mobile Market customers will earn copper colored "Fresh Express Double Up Food Bucks" tokens w hen they purchase Arizona-grown fruits and veggies with their SNAP benefits. They can then use the copper tokens to purchase any SNAP eligible foods for sale on Fresh Express.

Only copper tokens can be redeemed at Fresh Express Mobile Market sites and only silver tokens can be redeemed at participating Maricopa, Yavapai, and Pima Farmers Markets and Farm Stands.

We will be creating additional communication materials showing the different token approaches soon.
Quarterly Double Up Process Evaluation Updates

Coming up in April, we will be contacting market managers with a brief questionnaire to collect some additional information about your market's Double Up operations. After this questionnaire we will follow-up with you every quarter by phone and/or email to get any updates or changes you may have. We hope to make this additional information collection as simple for you all as possible.
Upcoming Pinnacle Prevention Market Site Visits

In February and March, we will be conducting market site visits. These visits will be an opportunity for you and your customers to tell us how things have been going at your site and what we can do to help DFBA run more smoothly.

Two or three of us from the Pinnacle Prevention team will come to each market on a date that works for you and your market staff. We will be there for the whole market duration so we can find time to chat with market staff and DFBA eligible growers during quiet periods to minimize disruptions to your day. We will also be asking customers who are using DFBA to complete a customer survey.

In preparation for these visits, Kathleen Carlson will be reaching out to each market manager to select a market date in February and March to schedule our visit.

Please think about what dates would work best for you, questions you may have for us and anything you'd like to highlight to us while we are visiting.

See you all soon!
