Jaycees Creed
We believe...
that faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; that the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; that economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; that government should be of laws rather than of men; that earth's great treasure lies in human personality; and that service to humanity is THE BEST WORK OF LIFE!

Greetings!
The Dover Jaycees have been busy lately and we would like to show you some of our recent events and projects we are planning for the upcoming months. We had a successful CPG training to teach members how to plan a project. We also showed our community support by setting up games for kids at the First Friday event in downtown Dover. We have a community clean-up event and a golf tournament fundraiser planned for the upcoming months. We need your support in order to make these events successful. We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting and event.

CPG Training
We had a Chairman's Planning Guide (CPG) training on August 2nd. Thanks to Tina Macko, we all learned how simple the process is, though not always easy. This was an excellent training session. And, thanks to Sue Post who hosted us.
We went through the whole document using the Goodwill Cleanup Project as an example. We learned that the CPG is not only a tool to plan a project, but the last couple of steps actually evaluate the project. For example, what worked well and what could have been done better? Or, is it a project we would like to repeat? With the CPG, the event/project does not have to be re-created. We just look at the CPG for the last one and take it from there.
The answers to the first 7 questions of the CPG are to be stated in the future tense because we are in the planning stages of the event. In the document, we include any historical info we have, if it is a recurring project, Who What Where When and How, etc. The Budget is very important because if it will cost more money than we can raise, then it is not a project we want to pursue at the moment.
Once the CPG (the first part only) is written, then it needs to be presented before the Board to decide if this is a project/event we would like to pursue. Once it is approved and has run, then the last steps are to evaluate the project/event. This is especially important if the project/event is going to be a repeated project. This gives important information as to how to duplicate the project. If you need assistance in writing a CPG, please do not hesitate to contact Shelby Everline at IDVP@DoverJaycees.org and she will help you get in contact with an expert who can help you.

Jaycees Participate in First Friday
This month's First Friday event took place on Friday, August 5, 2011. The Dover Downtown Partnership hosted the annual Beach Party! They invited the legendary "Honeycombs" to play throughout the evening, while many patrons sat on beach chairs and curbs and enjoyed the sounds of the band. The merchants had awesome sales and entertainment. Along with the 25 ft beach ball, there were many other beach balls floating up and down the Loockerman Street. TD Bank participated in this event by having games and giving out beach balls. Hunter House Food Extravaganza also participated by hosting a "Big Fish" sandwich challenge, which was a major success.
The Dover Jaycees participated in this event by supplying games for the children. We played Corn Hole with them and handed out candy as the prize! This was our first month participating in First Friday and we plan to continue doing so for future events! Members who were in attendance include: Sue Post, Shelby Everline, Catherine Hall, Eric Riddle, Jeff Lank, Tina Macko, and Connie Sanders. We had such an awesome that we continued our night to La Tolteca; Rachel Dunning and Liz Balogh joined us! Next 1st Friday: September 2, 2011 from 5-7pm. |
Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing Volunteers needed to serve food to homeless men The Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing (DIHM) is a non-profit corporation of local individuals, faith communities and organizations dedicated to providing shelter and services to homeless men. The DIMH is Dover's only men's shelter and is located at 684 Forest St. which is now their permanent home. Local Director, Rachel Dunning, has volunteered serving food and also maintains the Shelter's Facebook page. The shelter houses approximately thirty men and only recently opened a kitchen in their facility. Planning a dinner involves having about ten people to bring food, serve, and eat with the men. We would need to plan a menu and have enough food for about 45 people. Dinner menus are relatively simple- a main course, a salad, side dishes, and a desert. Besides the dinner, the men enjoy the companionship and the opportunity to speak to different people. Contact Information www.doverinterfaithmission.org www.facebook.com/DoverInterfaithMission interfaithdover@verizon.net 684 Forest Street Dover, DE 19904 If you would like to volunteer, please contact Rachel Dunning at rldunning22@gmail.com Visit DIHM's website to learn more about this incredible organization! |

Individual Development Update Shelby Everline
It's August already???? Wow! The Dover Jaycees are not just going along for the ride. We are staying active. Here are just a couple things we have going on in the world of Individual Development.
We had a Chairman's Planning Guide (CPG) training on August 2nd. Thanks to Tina Macko (Thanks, Tina!), we all learned how simple the process is, though not always easy. Those was an excellent training session.
We have been pursuing the start of a Speak-Up and Write-Up Program in the Dover Chapter. We are continuing to pursue this program and possibly partnering with another Chapter. Currently, we are exploring venues and dates to pursue this program, which helps participants gain confidence in speaking in front of an audience. You are given a topic about 10 days prior to the competition to prepare a 5-7 minute speech on the given topic. After the judges score the participants, those that do well enough, get a 'callback' to give another speech. Those are then given a topic and given one minute to prepare a 3 minute speech. The winners of local competitions go on to state competitions then to regional and finally national competitions.
Speak-Up is a great program to hone your speaking skills and become more comfortable speaking in front of people. Maybe you are not ready to participate in Speak-Up, but would like to hone your writing skills. That is where Write-Up comes in. It runs the same way as Speak-Up, except you sit down with paper and writing utensil and then are given the topic. You are given 30 minutes to complete the write-up by yourself (no internet, talking to others, etc.). In the same manner, some writers are given a 'callback' and are given another topic and given a shorter time to write on the topic. Winners of Write-Up locally, in similar fashion go on to state competitions, regional and finally national competitions.
If you are interested in either of these programs or know of a venue, judges, etc., please contact Shelby Everline via email at IDVP@DoverJaycees.org.
