Downtown Notes
Broadway Street has two well known structures disappearing this week. The dismantling process of the Broadway Bridge, day and night, began on Tuesday with a community ceremony and the rerouting of approximately 25,000 commuters through downtown. Much of the traffic is being rerouted to the Main Street Bridge which has a daily traffic count of 15,000. The historic bridge was dedicated to soldiers of World War I when it opened in 1923. The new bridge is scheduled to be completed in six months.
Another building disappeared without much fanfare but as a surprise to those who noticed it suddenly gone... the Broadway Shell & Food Mart at Broadway and Eighth. Owned by Coulson Oil Company, Inc., a Road Runner store is being built on the site with the new Shell fuel island to be located at the back of the store facing Arch Street. The new gas station is scheduled to open in early 2017.
Celebrity Attractions announced this week an addition to its already spectacular schedule of productions with the reopening of the Robinson Center in November...The award-winning Broadway production of
The Lion King
in the spring of 2018. In making the announcement, Ed Payton, CEO of Celebrity Attractions, said this is the first time The Lion King has been in Arkansas and Little Rock because of restraints of the former historic structure.
The announcement came on the heels of the announcement of Phantom of the Opera coming to the Robinson Center in March 2017. Theatregoers are urged to subscribe to season tickets and email alerts here.
