Shortly after Dr. Erika LeBaron joined the Kaplan Center practice earlier this year, she had the unique opportunity to participate in a medical mission to Honduras organized by the

Every March, for over 40 years, the Hackett Hemwall Foundation has been sending physicians who are trained in prolotherapy to Honduras to provide medical services to members of the community who have little or no access to medical help. The foundation was established in 1969 by Dr. Gus Hemwall, a surgeon in private practice in Chicago.

Prolotherapy, which is short for "proliferative therapy," is a sophisticated method of Regenerative Injection Therapy where natural solutions, such as high concentration dextrose, are delivered to areas of injury to restart and maximize the body's own wound-healing processes. This healing technique is most often applied to painful and injured joints, ligaments, and tendons to encourage the restoration of normal, healthy tissue. As such, prolotherapy can help people to avoid surgery in some cases. Learn more about prolotherapy and the conditions that can be treated effectively with it here.

Members of the Kaplan Clinic medical team have been participating in this mission for the last 4 years. In March 2014, Dr. Erika LeBaron spent 7 days in the town of Olanchito. I asked her if she would be interested in writing about her experience - she happily agreed and you can read about her journey below.

With best wishes for your optimal health,

Gary Kaplan, DO

"This year there were 70 physicians from 7 countries for the annual

HHF trip to Honduras. I am blessed to have been one of them."

- Erika LeBaron, DO

It was a cold dark morning in early March when the plane lifted off from Reagan National Airport, but the weather would soon change... and not only the weather, but also the culture, and my experience with prolotherapy. When I arrived in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Central America, I joined 70 other physicians from 7 countries who had all made their journey there for one common purpose - to volunteer our time with the Hackett Hemwall Foundation and provide prolotherapy to people in Honduras.

When I walked out of the airport in San Pedro Sula, the sky was beautiful. The sun was hot. It was so nice to soak up the warmth of the sun after a long cold Virginia winter. The buses were already waiting - 2 yellow school buses, the kind with the hard green bench seats, ones like I rode back & forth for school from K-12. I boarded one of the buses and made my way to the back to find a seat for our 3 hour road trip to LaCieba. Read More
