Greetings!

We are happy to share with you an exclusive message by Dr. Pillai.

It was written by him in memory of Swami Ramalingam's Ascension Day on February 7th (Pushya star day in the Tamil month of Thai). Dr. Pillai writes:

Why do we have to have a light body?

For two reasons: First, to gain immunity from pain and sorrow.

By pain, I mean bodily discomforts caused by diseases, ageing and injury to this body. By sorrow, I mean primarily emotional pain over loss of a loved one, or disappointments in relationships.

We need freedom from both pain as well as sorrow.

The second reason why we should get a light body is to experience bliss. It is simply not enough to overcome pain and sorrow. We should experience constant bliss.

There is a tradition in India that the Gurus add a suffix 'ananda' to their names (eg. Atmananda, Sivananda, Muktananda, Premananda, Nityananda).

'Ananda' means bliss. By adding a suffix to their names, they want to declare to the world, at least theoretically, that they are blissful.

But, practically speaking, no one can experience 'ananda' (bliss) without a light body.

A doctor devotee of Ramana Maharishi, who was attending to the saint during the latter's fight with cancer, was very much moved by the pain that the Maharishi was going through.

He burst out in anger and addressed the Maharishi - "You say everything is Brahman. Is pain Brahman too (or evil)?"

What then is the difference between a saint suffering from cancer versus an ordinary person?

The doctor's question is relevant, although you can answer him by saying - the cancer of the Maharishi is other people's karma which he took upon himself, whereas the ordinary person's cancer is his own karma.

I have no doubt that the Maharishi picked up some karma from his devotees, but the question still remains: Is it possible to be immune from suffering?

As long as there is a physical body of flesh and blood, it is impossible. That is why we need the light body.

Light body is not exclusively the concept of the Siddhas. It is the core teaching of Christianity as well. Christ himself talked about eternal life all the time.

However, it is Paul in Corinthians who made the light body concept clear. He categorically said that the corruptive flesh and blood body will never inherit the kingdom, and at the right time, God will turn the body into light at the wink of an eye.
