Welcome to September. This is a seasonal transition into cooler (and today wetter, at least in Colorado) weather as well as the return to school for children as well as college students and teachers.

A well functioning digestive system is a key to health since without it, the immune system, etc. will suffer if the proper nutrients are not being absorbed and delivered to the target tissues and organs. This is the perfect time of year to get your health in order in preparation for the winter months as well as the cold and flu season.

 Asthma Linked to Celiac Disease
 

People with the digestive disorder known as celiac disease are more likely to develop another disorder involving the immune system: asthma, according to a new study.

Specifically, a group of European researchers found that people with celiac disease were 60 percent more likely to develop asthma, relative to those without celiac. From Reuters Health

 Leaky Gut Syndrome May Play a Role in Arthritis
 

Some researchers claim that leaky-gut syndrome, or increased intestinal permeability, is implicated in dozens of diseases. The syndrome is the result of the wall of the small intestine being damaged.

A healthy intestine allows only nutrients to pass into the bloodstream. When the intestine is damaged, larger molecules such as incompletely digested fats, proteins, starches, and even bacteria, also permeate the intestinal wall.From About.com

 What Are Food Allergies?
 

What are food allergies? This is a difficult question with confusing answers (possibly because some doctors use semantics to trivialize a problem they have trouble dealing with). When the term "allergy" was first coined, it meant an adverse reaction to any substance that does not bother most people. Then in the 1920's, it was discovered that a type of antibody called "Reagin" or IgE was involved in many allergic reactions, especially those to inhalants.  Quinoa Blend Gluten Free Pizza Crust and Bread
 

I love making pizza and there are so many ready made gluten free crusts out there in the marketplace. Some of my criticisms of them are that they often contain white rice and potato flour, which in most cases is not terrible, but I have had a few patients wish that there was a healthier version available, that contained a high protein gluten free grain such as quinoa, for example. I found one and am eager to share it with you and try it at home!
