Dear St. George Families,
As we conclude Catholic Schools Week approaches, I would like to thank all of our many families that promote our great school. Yesterday at Sacred Heart Parish we celebrated our annual Catholic Schools Week Mass. At this Mass teachers are recognized for their years of service to Catholic Education.
I recall a parent who shared her story of a special teacher who made a positive impact on her life. She finished by saying, "He probably doesn't even know he made a difference." This in turn makes me think about that internal realization that prompts someone to choose to be a Catholic schoolteacher. I wonder what determining factors make a teacher into the one someone remembers their whole life. Over the years I have asked many of my family, friends, and colleagues this question, "When you think of your favorite teacher, what makes them your favorite?" The number one answer is simply the fact that the teacher cared about them as an individual. We at St. George School teach and model caring about others while combining it with purpose - purpose in what God's plan is for us. Learning that, perhaps, what happens to "me" is not really about me. Whatever we do can more often than not affect others in an action/reaction relationship. We teach our children that the choices they make not only affect them, but it also affects others around them. We like to focus on the positive influences one can make. It comes down to impacting those around us in a caring way, acting as a springboard, or a catalyst for someone else. It's about aiding, nudging, convincing, impacting, or forming someone else so they can make a difference in another person's life. It is similar to Dominos or Newton's Cradle - that action/reaction effect which can be the result of direct or indirect forces.
Please be sure to thank those who made an impact on your life; for guiding you or nudging you to where you are today - your parents, a teacher, a family member or friend. Be sure to thank your child's teacher -for I witness first-hand, that they are making a positive difference in the lives of our children. What's our purpose in life? It may just be to help someone else achieve theirs.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 So give encouragement to each other, and keep strengthening one another, as you do already.
Yours in Catholic education,
Jack Nelson
