Dragon Tales  Weekly Newsletter

Der St. George Families,
Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent begins. Lent is a time when we strive to grow closer to God. To listen closer, to be more present.
Last night I was watching an episode of the "West Wing" on Netflix. At the end of the episode President Bartlett was talking to his priest. The priest asked President Bartlett "do you pray?" President Bartlett responded, "Yes, I often pray for wisdom but sometimes I would like a sign from God to know that he is listening."
The priest told a story of a man who lived on a farm. The farmer was very religious, prayed every day and believed God would take care of him. One night the weatherman came on the local news and warned the people that heavy rains were coming and flooding was imminent. People should evacuate to high ground. The man prayed to God, he was religious and he believed God would take care of him and he stayed on his farm and didn't evacuate to higher ground. The rains came and the waters rose. All of the townspeople were leaving and one of his neighbors came by his house in a pick-up truck with water up to near the floorboards. The neighbor asked the farmer to come with him and his family to higher ground. The farmer politely refused to leave and said, "Thank you but I am going to stay and pray, I am a religious man and God will take care of me." The waters continued to rise and the man was forced to his rooftop to escape the rising water. Soon a helicopter showed up and dropped a line for him so he could be climb to safety. The man refused telling the pilot, "I am going to pray, I am a religious man and God will take care of me." Sadly, the water continued to rise and the man drowns. He went to heaven and standing at the "pearly gates" asked to speak to God. He asked God, "Why did you let me drown? I was a religious man and I prayed to you but you didn't answer my prayers or send me a sign." God looked astonished and replied, "I sent you a weatherman who warned you about the approaching storm, a neighbor who offered to take you with him and his family to higher ground and a helicopter pilot who would have rescued you from your rooftop and whisked you away to safety. What more did you want!"
God is with us, the signs are there, we only need to listen and pray.

God bless,
Jack Nelson
