A Note from Elizabeth

Our St. Margaret's Green Team has been active in educating parishioners about how to work toward  fulfilling our sacred imperative to care for God's creation. Our church members have cleaned, planted, and recycled. Parishioners have chosen to use alternative forms of energy, have supported a LEED Silver certified building process, and initiated the installation of green-friendly products throughout the campus.

An exciting example was the installation of solar panels on our new formation building last spring that has garnered some interesting results.

How energy is measured:
A kilowatt, also abbreviated kW, is a globally recognized standard for measuring electricity. One kilowatt is equal to 1,000 watts.  Your electricity company charges by how much electricity you use per kilowatt hour (kWh). To put it simply, this means it measures the number of kilowatts you use over time.

In February and March combined, our solar panels generated 5840 kWh of energy.  According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average household electricity use is 11,496 kWh per year.  From Feb 1- March 31 (60 days), our formation building used 22,017kWh. So there is still a good deal of work to do to.

Some things YOU can do to reduce St. Margaret's energy COSTS:

DON'T automatically turn on lights when you enter a room. In fact, our building lobby and stairwell was designed to be used with less artificial light so give it a try without the lights first.

DO turn off lights when you leave a room. We have automatic sensors in most rooms, but they can and may have been bypassed.

DO use double-side printing and copying.

DON'T block the airflow around vents.

DO close the doors on campus.  Leaving doors wide open to a room or building may make it more inviting to come in, but it wastes energy. Don't prop doors open but allow them to close after people walk through the doorway. (Think parish hall doors and coffeehour.)

Can you sacrifice one hour sometime over the next few months? Just one?

We are looking for some volunteers to help us with keeping our native plant landscaping looking good. We need some Weed  Warriors!  All we ask is that you consider choosing a week between now and October and volunteer to stop by the church and pull some weeds for one hour. You can do it any time of day, any day of the week you choose. Weeding can be meditative, a good time for prayer, and give you a sense of accomplishment! Many hands will make light work!

Just sign up through the sign up genius at the following web link:
