Dear St. George Families,
Welcome back to school.....again! It certainly feels like we are starting over again. With that said: Pope Francis advises catechists, "BE catechists, don't work as catechists." He makes clear that it's not solely about what we do; it's about who we are. "Being a catechist is a vocation." As catechists, we deserve the support and formation to BE the person God is calling us to be.
There are 4 points four points of emphasis that assist in defining our mission as catechists, as we form cultures of faith, hope, and love within our schools:
1. Every Principal, teacher, and staff member in every school will share leadership in building the school's learning culture, and "be on fire" to ensure students' success.
2. A "new Pentecost" will occur daily in every school, as diverse languages, backgrounds, values, and abilities are understood, accepted, and integrated into the school's learning culture.
3. St. George School strives to be a "home of light and joy" in the darkness of our world.
4. Each one of us will be a "leader of light" grounded in faith, energized by hope, and consumed by our love for our school communities, and for the God who has called us to serve.
At this point in my letter to you, I was going to address the despair, suffering, and animosity in this world. I was going to focus on the negative cultural conditions all over God's great earth. Instead, I realized that the focus should be on the good. In my visits to the classrooms today I heard some things that brought tears to my eyes and some things that gave me goose bumps; not in bad ways, but in a good ways.
In one class the teacher read from their Shine Your Light Devotional - "Jesus tried to make the world a better place wherever He went. He always acted in ways that were kind, gentle, loving, helpful, and forgiving. And when He saw people doing wrong, He taught them to do what is right."
Another class was talking about moments in history that made lasting impressions on millions of people. She talked about remembering where she was on September 11, 2001. She went on to ask the students, "What do you think I did with my class when we heard the news?" The answer - "We prayed."
Let us all BE the hands of Christ...let's "be on fire" when we teach and set that positive example...let us be that light of joy and hope...let's love our neighbors, lead our youth, and build a culture of goodness, steeped in Catholic values.
God bless,
Jack Nelson
