Dreamland Members’ Match-play Championship
sponsored by Porsche Center Baku
Congratulations to William Blanchard who wins through to the final of the Porsche Matchplay. In a closely battled Semi-Final against Jamie McNiece, William won on the 17 th hole to ensure his place against Alan Brew in the final match. Due to work schedules we believe this match will be staged before the middle of October. Good Luck to both finalists!!!
2017 has been another progressive year for the golf course agronomy as the surfaces and landscape matures. The maintenance team are developing well from continued training and experience and we now have a very competent and well-structured local workforce. For further development we have 3 greenkeepers on the team who will be volunteering for this year’s 2017 Turkish Open at the Carya golf club in Belek, Turkey – A fantastic opportunity to work in golf professional golf course tournament preparation.

Back to maintenance - It’s that time of year again where we need to preform some cultural practices to grass surfaces to keep them in good health and top condition. In the last week of September we will be hollow-coring greens and tees and certain foregreens, followed by a sand application. Fairways will also receive a sand application over the first 10 days of October. We will do our best to assure that there is minimal disruption to golf play but please be aware of any machinery operators that may not see you before you seem them and give them a chance to move to the side before playing through.

Why do we need to punch holes, remove cores and apply sand? We do this to reduce the build-up of organic matter to aid water infiltration, nutrient uptake and air space in the soil, promoting healthy roots. The greens may not put their best immediately following aeration. The sand-filled holes you will see are normal and will recover quickly as we make the most of optimum growing conditions in October. The end result – healthy firm and smooth putting surfaces.

We can see from the pictures below what to expect. This example is from the greens, the same processes are used on tees and foregreens.

As we do our part to keep the greens in top condition I would like to ask that members and guests do their part by remembering to repair your pitchmarks! A pitch mark repaired in the first 5 minutes will recover, left any longer and it will die leaving dead patches of grass. After all it’s yourselves and other golfers that will be putting over these pitchmarks and nobody wants a diversion on the way to a birdie.
