"None of us is as smart as all of us"
March News

Alison Gittins, DBG &
Kay Carrick, St Cuthbert's Hospice

Spring has sprung and our members are certainly springing into action judging by the number of events below.
Our host for Valentine's night was the beautiful Manor House Sedgefield where we enjoyed business matchmaking followed by wine tasting.
This month we visited Palace Green Library just in time to see the Poetry exhibition, it's now been replaced by Courage, Comrades, Community - The History of the Light Infantry, another free exhibition not to be missed!

We were honoured to become the first member of St Cuthbert's Hospice 88 Club  at Tuesday's DBC event and urge other businesses to get involved.  For us, it's time to 'put our money where our mouth is', albeit a small annual amount to help the hospice continue to provide the highest standard of care. The range of benefits for Durham Business Group is also a very welcome bonus that we intend to fully utilise, and is typical of St Cuthbert's 'give and take approach.'   Lynn Hughes of Durham Family Chiropractic shared an update on her and brave hubby David's dancing training ahead of Saturday's Strictly Grand Finale, more below.

You may know I'm also challenging myself in April, taking part in the CEO Sleepout at Durham Cathedral and hope some of you might join in this great cause!

Happy Networking!
AlisonSig.

I'm honoured to be representing Durham Business Group taking part in the first CEO Sleepout to take place in the cloister of the magnificent Durham Cathedral, hoping to raise as much money as I can to support Durham's most needy.   This experience of course is only one night and in no way compares to the difficulties the homeless have to face each day - but it's a challenge I can do and I hope it will raise awareness and make some difference to those less fortunate.   Why not join me  or please sponsor me via the link below.  Thanks so much to all of you who have donated, it  is greatly appreciated and I'm blessed to have your support
Shimmer & Sparkle on Saturday
for Strictly St Cuthbert's!

Another member up for a challenge is Lynn Hughes of Durham Family Chiropractic, not only are Lynn and her colleagues joining the CEO Sleepout but she  and her brave hubby David are taking on the Strictly St Cuthbert's challenge!  Having had first hand experience of the 24 hour support offered by the hospice Lynn said "Everyone involved works with passion and dedication and we need to ensure this service remains available for all that need it.  So we decided to give it a whirl and a twirl!"

They are one of nine amazing couples who have put on their dancing shoes for eight weeks of training before the grand final at Rainton Meadows Arena on Saturday 18th March.  We're so proud of Lynn & David and know they and St Cuthbert's Hospice are so grateful for your support, why not go and cheer them on and enjoy a night of fun, frolics and fancy footwork.

Thanks to everyone who kindly donated to the bucket at Tuesday's DBC event, adding £67 to their total but if you missed it, it's not too late to support their amazing efforts..

The Return of the Tales from Fry!

"Where We Reduce Costs and We Protect Lives"

'Fry' has been the adopted 'mascot' of DBC Member Mike McCoy's business ME PAT Services for many years, gracing their business cards, leaflets, desk calendars, banners and the side of their van.

Mike and the team bought  the artwork some time ago and never looked back in that it has done so much, not only for their business, but has taken the edge off an often boring health and safety led subject that no one wants to talk about. The artwork has not only increased awareness but has helped generate a very memorable and reputable business.

Fry, along with Mike, will be making his first appearance on screen in a series of videos giving advice on electrical safety, the first titled 'Preventing electrical injury through simple safety checks around the workplace'. Mike and the team will be producing more helpful videos throughout 2017 with the aid of Steven and Roni, two lovely people at Blue Bandit Media www.bluebanditmedia.com  View the video here

Charities Boost Security Company Vinovium Associates
VINOVIUM

DBC Members Vinovium Associates are now expanding their workforce after being hired by both Auckland Castle Trust and its sister charity, Eleven Arches.

Vinovium Associates, based at South Church Enterprise Park, have created jobs for 10 local people who were previously unemployed, as a direct result of landing the contracts, which are the biggest in the firm's 19 year history.

The new full-time posts, which include guarding Auckland Castle and the site of the open-air live show 'Kynren - an epic tale of England', have been awarded to SIA trained candidates from Bishop Auckland, Shildon and Willington, with the possibility of more jobs being created soon.

Manor House Marks Second Birthday with a Full House

Many of us enjoyed Valentine's evening as The Manor House hosted the recent DBC event and we saw how the historic building has transformed into a thriving business centre.  It has marked its second birthday by welcoming two new tenants and reaching full capacity. Julie Twist Counselling and Andrea Irving-Morse Associates Ltd have moved into the Manor House in the centre of Sedgefield, bringing the total number of companies based in the building up to 13, occupying 6,000 sq ft of office space in the 18th Century building.  Read More
North East Punching Above its Weight for Start-up Investment

The North East of England was one of the top regions in Europe for start-up investment in 2016, according to data from research analysts Pitchbook.

In its 2016 Annual Global League Table, Pitchbook identified North East-based Northstar Ventures as the second most active venture capital (VC) investor in UK and Ireland, second only to Enterprise Ireland. The report also ranks Northstar as the 6 th most active investor in Europe, ahead of international VCs like Index Ventures and Seedcamp.  In 2016, all investments made by the team at Northstar were into North East businesses.
