Feast of the Conception of the Holy Virgin Anna
The Feast of the Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary is one of a cluster of holy days on which the Armenian Church expresses its tender devotion to the mother of Jesus Christ.
She began life as the child of Sts. Joachim and Anna, a devout couple whose earnest prayer was answered with the birth of a daughter. Through her life of holiness and purity, and her graceful acceptance of the role to which God called her, Mary ranks among the pre-eminent exemplars of the Christian faith, whose birth and very conception are occasions for celebration.
The feast of her conception always falls on December 9, which this year coincides with the third Sunday of Advent. Called Hisnag in Armenian (from the word for "fifty"), Advent is the 50-day season of anticipation-physical and spiritual-leading to the Nativity of our Lord. It is a time to orient our actions, thoughts, and prayers to the miracle of His birth, and to rediscover God's abundant gifts around us.

St. James' Khachkar Project
The Parish Council of Saint James Armenian Church in Evanston, IL, at Der Hovhan's behest and guidance, has made the decision to commission a khachkar from Armenia.
Our new khachkar will be made by an Armenian artist who lives and works in Armenia and who specializes in khachkars and has made several for other Eastern and Western Diocese parishes. Our khachkar will be sized to meet the architectural dimensions of the church building, and to be sure, in keeping with the tradition of khachkars, will be a unique creation with distinctive details that make no two khachkars alike. It will be placed outside in the small garden that adorns the entrance of our church.

Armenian Boy Becomes The Youngest-ever American Chess Grandmaster
13-year-old Sam Sevian completed the final requirement to earn the title of Grandmaster, the highest title a chess player can attain. He is now the youngest American Grandmaster in history.
Sevian, who lives in Boston, had already completed his three "norms", or superior performances in high-level tournaments, required by FIDE, the World Chess Federation. He just needed to top a strength rating of 2500 to earn the Grandmaster title. He was just 16 points shy of the mark when he arrived in St. Louis Friday to compete in the CCSCSL Invitational. Sam went on to win the Championship and earned the title of Grandmaster.
Once you earn Grandmaster status, you have it for life.
