Commemoration of St. Gregory the Theologian

St. Gregory the Theologian is one of the most prominent figures in Christianity. He was was born the son of Bishop Gregory in 328 AD in the village of Ariangue near the town of Naziangue in Cappadocia. St. Gregory studied in Caesaria and then in Athens where he became acquainted with St. Barsegh of Ceasaria, a prominent Christian theologian. After leading an ascetic life for a period, St. Gregory returned to Naziangue where he was ordained a priest by his father. Later, he became the Bishop of Sasima.

Together with St. Barsegh of Ceasaria, St. Gregory the Theologian struggled against the Arians, a sect that denied Christ's dual nature as both human and divine, most notably participating in the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople during which the Divinity of Christ was formally established.

St. Gregory also left behind a rich collection of religious treatises that greatly influenced the formulation of Christian theology. His works were translated into Armenian, in all probability by St. Moses of Khoronk, between the fifth and eighth centuries AD. St. Gregory the Theologian passed away on January 25, 389 AD.

Living the Gospel of Christ: Who Do You Say I Am?

Session VI

Wednesday, January 29 at 8 PM

This year's Diocesan theme is Living the Gospel of Christ. The ultimate goal of this series involves knowing, understanding and doing as Christ prescribed through His actions and teachings as depicted in the Gospels. This series will also help us understand both who Christ is and what His Message is.

As always, you can either join Der Hayr at St. James or participate online.

You need to download an application on your computer to be able to participate online. Questions? Click here

Go to www.stjamesevanston.org to join the session online on Wednesday.

Volunteers Needed

St. James Church is beginning a new undertaking and needs your help. We are in need of volunteers willing to give a few hours of assistance to elderly members of the Chicago Armenian community with household chores, minor home repairs, shopping, rides or just companionship.

We are in the process of putting together a directory of individuals interested in volunteering their time. This directory will be used by church staff to pair seniors in need of assistance with volunteers. (This is a great community service opportunity for students.) If you or someone you know wishes to help, please contact Der Hovhan at office@stjamesevanston.org or (847) 864-6263.
