Feast of the Discovery of the Belt of the Theotokos (Mother-of-God)

The second Sunday after the Assumption is the Feast of the Discovery of the Belt of the Theotokos (Mother-of-God).

Because there are no relics of the Holy Mother's earthly body (she was assumed into Heaven), her personal belongings became articles of devotion. He belt was the first item to be discovered in Jerusalem in the fifth century. This discovery is the basis for a feast day in the Armenian Church.

There are eight feast days dedicated to the Holy Mother of God: Her Nativity, Her Presentation to the Temple, the Annunciation, the Conception of Mary, the Purification, the Assumption, the Discovery of her Belt, and Discovery of her Box.

Commemoration of 318 Pontiffs participating in the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea

This council is the First Ecumenical Council in the history of the Church, which was convened upon the order of the King Costandianos the Great in the town Nicaea near Constantinople, in 327 A. D. 318 prominent pontiffs representing the Universal Church participated in the Council. The reason for convening the council was priest Arios of Alexandria, who preached that Christ was not without beginning, that he was created upon the Will of God before times and centuries, in order the creation of God to be realized by means of Christ. The only one not having birth, the only one eternal and without beginning is God the father. Son has been created not from the essence of the Father, but from nothing. There was a time when the Son did not exist. Although the Son has received all the virtues of the Father and is adopted, he is not pure as the Father is, he is changeable, as all human beings.

Because of such viewpoints of Arios the Divinity of Christ was denied and the entire Christian doctrine was endangered. Archbishop Alexander of Alexandria opposed to Arianism. In his sermons he stressed that God is eternal, and Son is eternal, Father and Son are of the same time. Father does not precede the Son even for a moment, Father has always existed and Son has always existed. The false teaching of Arius is condemned during the first Ecumenical Council and it is declared to be heresy.

Aristakes, son of St. Gregory the Illuminator, also participates in the first Ecumenical Council. The doctrinal formulation adopted by the Council, which is known as Nicene Creed, is brought to Armenia by Aristakes and is presented to St. Gregory the Illuminator.  The latter added to it the following passage: "As for us, we shall glorify him who was before the ages, worshiping the Holy Trinity and the one Godhead, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto ages of ages. Amen.".

The Nicene Creed, adopted in Nicaea, and the passage added by St. Gregory the Illuminator, are up to date used in the rites of the Armenian Apostolic Church without any change. Aristakes brings to Armenia also 20 canons adopted by the Council of Nicaea, which are also ratified by St. Gregory the Illuminator.

New Educational Program for Teenagers at St. James

The St. James Christian Education Committee would like to invite teenage parishioners between the ages of 13-19 to participate in a pilot educational program this fall. The program is a two-session seminar on September 28  and October 19 from 9:30-1:30 on Morality and Moral Choice and Mercy and Forgiveness. The seminar will be led by Parish Council member Gevik Anbarchian, a high school English teacher, and Der Hovhan. The focus of the program is to fuse Christian teaching with academics, including Armenian writers and artists,  in an effort to help impressionable youth critically examine their lives at a time when they are most unsure about religious and philosophical matters. Look for a formal invitation in your home mailbox.

A New Priest Ordained in Dallas

The newly-ordained Rev. Fr. Ghevond Ajamian
On August 25, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese, officiated at the ordination of the Rev. Fr. Ghevond Ajamian at the St. Sarkis Church of Dallas, TX, in the presence of the community, family, and guests from around the country.

The Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan was the sponsoring priest, and two of the candidate's uncles, Ara and Vartan Ajamian, served as godfathers.

The Very Rev. Fr. Simeon Odabashian, Rev. Fr. Nersess Jebejian, Rev. Fr. Mardiros Chevian, and Rev. Fr. Mikael Devejian assisted in the ordination.

It was a momentous occasion for the Armenian community in North Texas, involving months of preparation. The former Deacon Justin Ajamian arrived in the community more than two years ago to assume duties as the deacon-in-charge of the St. Sarkis Church. Since that time, the prospect of a priestly ordination in the community has been greatly anticipated.

The sense of excitement in the parish was noted by Archbishop Barsamian, who said in his remarks: "I feel the inspiration in this community. And with such inspiration, what at first seems impossible becomes possible."

Fr. Ghevond Ajamian will spend his 40-day period of seclusion at St. Nersess Seminary in New Rochelle, NY, after which he will return to take up pastoral duties at the Dallas church. A graduate of St. Nersess, who has also studied in Jerusalem and Armenia, Fr. Ghevond and his wife Yeretzgin Hasmik have a daughter, Noelle Srbouhi.

An Ecumenical Letter on the Plight of Christians in Egypt

The persecution of Egypt's age-old Coptic Christian community has been an ongoing concern for several years now, but it has reached horrifying levels in the past few weeks, following the fall of Egypt's government. Through items in the Diocesan e-newsletter, the Diocese has been expressing its concern and encouraging our parishes to pray. To our Coptic Orthodox brothers and sisters, we have opened the doors of St. Vartan Cathedral, as a welcoming sanctuary for their services of solemn remembrance.

On August 22 the ecumenical organization Christian Churches Together (CCT) released a letter on the situation of Christians in Egypt. We have attached it to this message, in PDF format, for the attention of our Diocesan leadership. Please take the time to read the letter, and consider sharing its message of mutual concern with your communities.

CLICK HERE to open the file.

We are grateful to note that Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, the ecumenical director of our Diocese-as well as a founding member of CCT, and the current president of its Orthodox family of churches-is one of the signatories of the letter.

In this time of tribulation for so many people-the Copts in Egypt, our fellow Armenians in Syria, and others-we ask you to offer prayers for their safety, for an end to violence, and for general peace in the Middle East.

PLEASE SIGN UP FOR A COFFEE HOUR

Coffee hour tables can be simple or complex.  Sometimes when people do a coffee hour table they put out coffee cakes and doughnuts; sometimes they put out some fruits. Others put out entire lunch. We encourage you to sign up for coffee hour a couple of times each year. It can be simple or an entire meal - either is fine. The sign-up sheet is in the church hall.
