Feast of the Nativity of the Holy Mother-of-God

This Sunday, September 8, is the Feast of the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God. The birth of Mary is not recorded in the Bible. The account of this event comes to us from other writings that are not part of the New Testament. According to tradition, Joachim and Anna were faithful and pious, waiting for the promised Messiah. They were elderly and childless. They prayed to God for a child and were blessed with a daughter they named Mary, who would become the Mother of the Messiah.

Eve of the Fast of Exaltation of the Holy  Cross

This Sunday is the Eve (Paregentan) of the fast leading to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Khachveratz), which is next Sunday, September 15. Because the Exaltation is a Tabernacle Feast, it is preceded by a week (Monday to Friday) of fasting.

New Educational Program for Teenagers at St. James

The St. James Christian Education Committee would like to invite teenage parishioners between the ages of 13-19 to participate in a pilot educational program this fall. The program is a two-session seminar on September 28  and October 19 from 9:30-1:30 on Morality and Moral Choice and Mercy and Forgiveness. The seminar will be led by Parish Council member Gevik Anbarchian, a high school English teacher, and Der Hovhan. The focus of the program is to fuse Christian teaching with academics, including Armenian writers and artists,  in an effort to help impressionable youth critically examine their lives at a time when they are most unsure about religious and philosophical matters. Look for a formal invitation in your home mailbox.

Relic of St. Vartan to Arrive in Eastern Diocese

The ornate cross containing a relic of St. Vartan the Brave, set into the square "eye" at the center of the reliquary.
This week, as Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian travels to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, he will receive a unique piece of Armenia's history: a relic of St. Vartan the Brave.

The 1,500-year-old relic-a piece of stone encrusted with the blood of Armenia's 5th-century warrior saint, and encased in a beautiful silver cross-is the gracious gift of His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians. His Holiness is giving the relic to the Eastern Diocese in honor of the 45th anniversary of New York's St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral.

The reliquary containing the relic of St. Vartan will be brought to the U.S. escorted by two special couriers, and will be unveiled to the public on Sunday, September 15, as part of the official celebration of the 45th anniversary of St. Vartan Cathedral. The day will include services as well as a luncheon and program-to which the public is cordially invited. (See the item below under Events for information.)

The relic will subsequently make its permanent home in New York City. But in the coming months the Primate will be bringing the relic of St. Vartan with him on his parish visits, so that all the parishioners of the Eastern Diocese can view it in person.

From the ashes
Armenian culture in Turkey

A DAINTY silver slipper, a hand-engraved copper bowl. Silva Ozyerli, an ethnic Armenian, runs a loving finger over these and other family treasures strewn across her dinner table in Istanbul. They are due to go on display at a new museum of Armenian culture in Ms Ozyerli's native city of Diyarbakir at the end of 2013.

The Armenian museum, the first of its kind in Anatolia, will be part of the newly restored Surp Giragos church complex (pictured). Its aim is to chronicle Armenian life in Diyarbakir, in Turkey's mainly Kurdish south-east, before 1915. That was the year when Ottoman troops and their Kurdish accomplices began slaughtering over 1 million Armenians and other Christians across the country during what many historians say was the first genocide of the 20th century.

PLEASE SIGN UP FOR A COFFEE HOUR

Coffee hour tables can be simple or complex.  Sometimes when people do a coffee hour table they put out coffee cakes and doughnuts; sometimes they put out some fruits. Others put out entire lunch. We encourage you to sign up for coffee hour a couple of times each year. It can be simple or an entire meal - either is fine. The sign-up sheet is in the church hall.
