From the Minister
It was Marshall Brickman who, in 1977, made the original claim, attributing it to Woody Allen: "As Woody says, 'Showing up is eighty percent of life.'"
Since then, the saying has appeared in various forms - sometimes with "success" or "the battle" in place of "life," and with percentages ranging from 50 to 99.
If showing up is 80 (or 50, 75, 90 or 99) percent of life, what's the remaining part? Isn't that also showing up? First, just be there. Second,
really be there.
The first "P" of the "Four P's" of the meaning of membership in a congregation is "Presence" - a meaningful membership entails showing up at Sunday worship and at your Journey Group. Just be there. Show up. And then
really show up. The second "P" is "Participation." Participating in the life of the congregation as a member includes being at congregational meetings as a member to cast your vote. It also may include serving on a committee, teaching RE, attending various other CUC programs, hosting a coffee hour, etc. These are also mostly matters of showing up. And the rest is
fully showing up - bringing the fullness of your being, your attention, your unique and creative engagement, your gifts (which, as always, also means your shadows).
Yours in the faith we share,
Meredith

June Theme: Prescence/Mindfulness
|
Practice of the Week:
Pray
We need a Unitarian Universalist theology of prayer, because, for many of us, what we learned in childhood about what prayer is doesn't make sense to us anymore, so we don't pray. Prayer is not about asking for stuff with any expectation that it will magically appear. Prayer does not require believing in a personlike entity or committing to the notion that reality-as-a-whole has knowledge and desires. READ MORE...

Mindfulness
Rev. Meredith Garmon "Mindfulness" is all the rage these days -- and "Mindfulness/Presence" is our theme of the month for June. So, what's it all about? For what is it good? Is it really worth the effort?
