With thanks for 33 years

Jeanne Schossow

This week we say thank you to Jeanne Schossow, who is retiring after 33 years of service in the business office of the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center.  Jeanne has been the super glue that held together many internal functions of the Center for more than three decades.

In the words of executive director Ellery Duke:

" Jeanne began as the Center's receptionist, handling all the Center's accounting and reporting needs, including payroll. As the Center has grown, so have Jeanne's responsibilities, which have ultimately included business manager, human resources director, IT manager, office manager of a support staff of six, HIPAA compliance officer, building manager and many other duties.

"The staff has grown from four to thirty-five; the budget from $140,000 to nearly $3 million. Jeanne was here for our first tech upgrade, a used IBM Selectric, and our second, an 8-inch floppy drive computer! The whole staff has relied on Jeanne for numerous and changing needs throughout the Center's history.

"All of us have been blessed by her competent, generous and loving spirit."

Health Tip: What is the Secret to Well-Being?

Ellery Duke, Ph.D.
By Dr. Ellery Duke, licensed psychologist and executive director, Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center

According to Sigmund Freud, to love and to work are the two keys that give life all its meaning. This idea was taken further by philosopher Kahlil Gibran who said that work in itself is love. In other words, when work is approached with love, love can be its greatest reward. But how does one find purpose in their work when they're at odds with their work - say, underemployed, unemployed, or facing retirement?

Research shows that the secret to well-being is to find ways to help others, no matter our position. Some of us are lucky enough find our purpose in the daily work outlined in our job descriptions. Yet all of us are situated to reach out to those around us, to offer comfort, support and encouragement. This heightened sense of purpose can improve the health of others, and ourselves. It is a win-win proposition.

This health tip first appeared in the Urbandale Chamber Newsletter, August 1, 2016.
COOL - Children Overcoming the Obstacles of Life

We are pleased to post this classic article by Grace Percival, co-founder of the Center's COOL practice (Children Overcoming the Obstacles of Life).

Children are born with varying degrees of potential for growth - physically, cognitively, emotionally, and relationally. They rely on and look to the adults in their environment to not only keep them safe, but to help in the monumental and awesome task of realizing their potential to understand and integrate the world around them.
They are eager to connect and to please. They are eager to develop relationship. It is what they are born to do.

Meet the staff

It takes a village to support the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center. Penny Heiss (L), the Center's office manager and Katie Buntz (R), the Center's billing/insurance coordinator, run thousands of daily details behind the scenes to ensure smooth operations.

This photo was taken at the annual Women Helping Women luncheon in May 2016, where Penny and Katie volunteered their time and expertise at the information desk. Dedicated to upholding dignity and respect for all who come to the Center, these ladies get things done. (photo credit: Ellery Duke)
