PW Mission Sunday

This Sunday we have three worship services: 8:30 a.m. (Chapel), 10 a.m. (Sanctuary), and at Noon (Third Service) in the Fellowship Building.

We welcome International Peacemaker, Phares Nyaga Mithamo, Director of the Eastleigh Community Center in Nairobi, Kenya, a ministry of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) as our PW Mission Sunday guest speaker.

This is a video of the Presbytery of Detroit Thika Partnership Team's visit to Kenya in 2014 as they visited and worshiped with their partners and then dedicated a new water well.

Presbytery of Detroit Thika Partnership Team Visit to Kenya 2014

The area around the Kiwanza Presbyterian Church in the Yatta area is away from the city of Thika, Kenya. The Yatta area is rural and the river is the primary source of water for the community. That river is sometimes like a creek with pools of water, not flowing water. The water is drawn directly from the river and is never what we would call clean, drinkable water. The Kiwanza Presbyterian Church is an established church and sponsors a primary school; it is common in Kenya for churches to sponsor private schools as mandatory education for all children has only been required a few years. Public schools are crowded and quality of education is generally not as good as in the private schools.

Putting a well in this community would mean that children would have access to good, safe water when they come to school.

Clean water will greatly improve the health and well-being of students. Others in the community would have access to this well that will be managed by a well board of church and community members. There will be a minimal fee charged for the water in order to maintain the well system that includes a deep well, a solar-powered electric pump, a reservoir tank, and a commitment to regular testing for water purity.

The Presbyteries of Thika, a part of the Presbyterian Church in East Africa (PCEA),

and Detroit have been working together for around 20 years; with support from Detroit there are already two wells in place, one a shallow well with a hand pump and the other a deep well drilled through rock and having a solar-powered pump. One of these wells is dedicated to Fran Anderson for her tireless efforts in getting this project completed.

Drilling this new well and putting all the accompanying systems in place will cost around $45,000 because the well must be solar-powered because there is no electricity in the area, and the well must be drilled through bedrock. So far $5,000 has been raised…..

The Presbytery of Thika group has applied for a grant from next year’s Thank offering which is a special offering of the Presbyterian Women. Each year, domestic and international projects are carefully and prayerfully selected to help meet a crucial need for women and children.

The life-saving project is also on the list by the PRESBYTERY OF DETROIT for 2017 EXTRA COMMITMENT OPPORTUNITIES (ECO). This is a list of ministries approved by Presbytery for giving beyond shared mission contributions.

We would like to dedicate a special offering this Sunday to help build this well. There will be special offering envelopes for the well. If you write a check, please write the check to “Presbytery of Detroit.”

What is a Thank Offering?

The Thank Offering is one of Presbyterian Women’s two offerings. Received in the fall each year, it gives women a tangible way to express their gratitude for the special blessings in their lives. Thank Offering grants range from $5,000 to $50,000. At least 40 percent of the offering funds health ministries.

One example: In 2017—thanks to generous giving to the 2016 Thank Offering—15 projects (10 national and 5 international) will receive grants from the Thank Offering. The Thank Offering provides food and water, alleviates homelessness, provides educational opportunities, promotes health, and improves the lives of women, children and men throughout the world in many other ways.

This innovative mobile food pantry will serve children and their families in one school district in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan by providing fresh food to children who are on free and reduced lunch programs. The target is to feed 3,539 children for one year. When people visit the mobile food pantry, they each receive 50 pounds of food to feed themselves and their family for the month.

Please be cautious around the main church building. The roof is being repaired and we may be inconvenienced for a number of weeks until this project is completed. The Cleveland entrance is now affected but is perfectly safe (and kinda of fun) to enter.

Merry Mates Halloween Treat

A Halloween treat awaits the Merry Mates at the Roman Village Italiana, 9924 Dix Avenue in Dearborn on Saturday, October 28 at 1 p.m.

The Deacons of APPC, in partnership with the Allen Park Downtown Development Authority, are hosting a community Trunk or Treat event for the community at the last Downtown Farmer’s Market (in our south parking lot) on Friday, October 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. Setup time is 3 p.m.

We are looking for folks to “decorate” the trunk of their car with Halloween decorations — be creative — and pass out candy during the event. We also need a lot of extra candy to supplement the candy for the people with the decorated trunks.

This is an easy and fun way to be involved with a fun community event. Sign up in the church office today!

PEACEMAKING OFFERING

If you did not do so last week, today would be a great day to give to the Peacemaking Offering. A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. Individual congregations are encouraged to utilize up to 25% of this Offering to connect with the global witness of Christ's peace.

Mid councils retain an additional 25% for ministries of peace and reconciliation. The remaining 50% is used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for peace and justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness.

There are envelopes in the pews, in your packet of envelopes at home, and you can donate online.

October Friendship Group Outing

Friendship Group Outing

The Friendship Group invites all who are interested to visit the Michigan Military Heritage Museum in Grass Lake, Michigan on Thursday, October 26 .

We will leave the church at 11 a.m. and plan to return by 4 p.m. We will have lunch together at a local café and a personal tour of the museum by Belinda Grier (Shirley Slotka’s daughter). The cost is $3 for transportation — please bring money for your lunch.

Donations will be gratefully accepted at the museum for continued development and additions to the collection.

October Youth Group Schedule

Oct 15. - CHANGE OF PLANS

Our food pantry is in desperate need of non-perishable food so we have decided to go on a scavenger hunt in the neighborhood gathering up food. BUT it's youth group, so we are going to make it a competition between the Middle School Youth Group and the High School Youth Group. Yep, the type of food we receive has points - may the most motivated group win because then everyone wins when our pantry has plenty of food on the shelves!

Oct 22 - Camp Sunday and Cider Mill

Come, celebrate all the fun we had and the things we learned at Camp Wakanda this year with a special camp-themed service at 10 a.m. (we will have worship at 8:30 a.m. /10 a.m. and / Noon.

THEN at 4 p.m. join us for youth group as we head out to the CIDER MILL AND CORN MAZE -- do I hear donuts?? Cost is $6 and a current LPA is required.

Friday, October 27 - Concession Stand at Trunk or Treat

Let's provide something to eat and drink for all the people who are working at the Trunk or Treat and attending the event. Setup is 3 p.m. - need folks to help setup and youth to sell and serve. Watch for the Sign-up Genius ! Wear your Halloween costume! (optional, but encouraged - because you are never too old to have fun all for a good cause!)

Oct 29 - Punkin' Chuckin' & Halloween Fun - Let's help out at McNally's by cleaning up the pumpkins that were leftover by the high school homecoming floats and have a little fun along the way. And by fun, we mean more fun than touching gross pumpkins!!!!!

Mittens, Gloves, Scarves and Hats for Men, Women and Children

In January, the youth groups will be heading out into the cold to hang hats, mittens and scarves on trees in public spaces likes parks. If you can, please start saving these items now before the Christmas rush - so we will have plenty to share in addition to those we already collect for the Mitten Tree and Giving Tree. Our food pantry is critically low. We were not even able to provide the minimum amount of boxes last week. Our food pantry is meant to provide emergency food that will provide for a few meals when folks are experiencing a financial hardship.
