Happy New Year!  It's time to start tournament fishing!

USA Fishing Trails has its first tournament in 2015 this coming weekend on Sunday, January 11th, as the new Marshall division kicks off on Martin Creek (late registration and weigh in at Martin Creek State Park). The following excerpt from the Texas Parks and Wildlife website explains perfectly why Martin Creek was selected as the first tournament of the year:

"Since Martin Creek is a power plant lake, water temperatures are elevated, especially during the winter months. Anglers are most successful at catching largemouth bass during the winter and early spring. Typically, largemouth bass at Martin Creek will spawn approximately two months earlier when compared to other nearby reservoirs. Prior to spawning (November and December), fish are typically active and crankbaits and spinnerbaits are usually the preferred choice. Once spawning begins (January and February), soft plastic baits fished slower will catch fish."

The Marshall division fishes four lakes in 2015: Martin Creek, Lake O' the Pines, Lake Tyler, Caddo Lake, and back to Lake O' the Pines. The full schedule can be seen here.

So, dress warm, and get ready to wear some fish out on a power plant lake in January!

Good luck to everyone that is fishing this weekend!
