This Week at Memorial...
I am a bit odd in the world of Methodism. The senior pastor I had, while growing up in my home church, served that church for 22 years. So, this year is the first time I have ever experienced the transition of a senior pastor!
And, for those of you who did not grow up in the Methodist Church, with our quirky itinerant system, this year has been a new experience for both of us, as well. Leadership transitions in any organization are difficult. Pastor Charlie enters into a church where the staff has a combined 50 years of experience working at this church, and there is a lot for him to catch up on. Fortunately, we are part of a connectional church which offers resources that help pastors and churches manage these transitions well.
On Monday and Tuesday of this week, our whole staff went through an intentional process of "on-boarding" with Pastor Charlie lead by Janet Earls, the Director of Congregational Vitality for the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. This is a new program the Conference has started to help pastors and staff work together better. The whole staff really felt the Spirit’s presence and guidance throughout the process and it has brought us all closer together. It is such an honor and privilege for me to serve here at Memorial, and I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to serve with Pastor Charlie as he leads us in the next chapter. I know that you all are joining me in praying for him and for our leadership.

Gratefully,
  Pastor Drew

Snapshots of Grace
Last week, 18 youth and 6 adult chaperones from Memorial took the annual trip to Branches in Florida City to be in mission with the kids attending their ”Summer Shade” program. Our youth truly felt what it was like to be the hands and feet of Christ as they interacted with kids and led them in activities. Below, is a slideshow of some of their favorite moments!

Special Icon Retreat Coming to Memorial. Very Few Spaces Remain! A very special retreat opportunity is coming to Memorial. Goal of this retreat is listening to God through the practice of spiritual disciplines to deepen one's walk with God During this 5-day retreat, National Icon Instructor, Kara Nelson, will lead the prayerful practice of “writing” a Byzantine style icon. (right) This is not an art class. This is a prayerful experience, with an emphasis on the spiritual practices of worship, silence, prayer, and iconography. As the blank boards are transformed, the prayer is that we may also be transformed in the process. The course fee is $300/person for 5 full days of instruction and includes all supplies for painting as well as a midday meal. Class will be held each day from 8:30am-4:30pm. This workshop is open to all and does not require previous art experience. Space is limited. Message from the Northeast District Superintendent
Dear Northeast Family,

I know that many of you are waiting to read the report of the Commission on A Way Forward (“COAWF”). The Commission’s intention all along has been to release the report simultaneously in the four official languages of our church: English, Portuguese, French, and Swahili. They felt it was only fair to our international sisters and brothers to be able to read the report all at the same time. Last week, however, the Council of Bishops requested a declaratory judgment from the Judicial Council on whether the three plans were constitutional. Their desire was to avoid what happened at General Conference 2012 in Tampa where major reforms in the church structure were adopted (after a multiple-years process) only to be declared unconstitutional.
In requesting the declaratory judgment, briefs had to be submitted to the Judicial Council including the report from the COAWF and the accompanying legislation for the three plans. Briefs and exhibits to the Judicial Council are public and, accordingly, all of the documents are now available even though the translations have not been completed.
If you would like to read the COWAF’s report and the accompanying legislation, you will find them here: http://cdnfiles.umc.org/Website_Properties/who-we-are/judicial-council/judicial-council-dockets/docket-10-2018-12.pdf * The report begins on page 131 and the legislation begins on page 34.
I ask that you continue to pray for the delegates to the called General Conference in February, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri, who will consider the legislation and other petitions related to our current impasse about human sexuality. God bless you!

All God's love,
Jay
